Weekly open thread for 22 August, 2026

We did it! We made it to the weekend! Let's celebrate with an open thread! Talk about anything and everything you'd like!

I do have a quick community note, however:

We don't often get self-promotion posts here. And, up until this week, we have never had a self-promotion post from a "vibe coder" developer before.

I am content to let posts like this get downvoted into oblivion, but I'm open to establishing more defined rules surrounding this kind of thing if the comm wants it. To wit: How much self-promotion should we tolerate? If we allow any, should slop be banned outright, or merely tagged?

Something to think about, anyway.

It's already Saturday? I DID NOT see the week go by. Seriously. When I saw this post I thought, "Ha! They posted a day early!"

That means that I have just today and tomorrow left before returning to work.

I finished making my partner's website, she is happy. I made it with Geany, Astro, a pre-made theme, and Rosé Pine. The most time-consuming part was changing the theme to make it multilingual. Now, though, I've just realized that the author of the theme did not specify the license...

RE: self-promotion posts

Lemmy seems to be a target for a certain type of self-promotion: a freshly-made account, a photo/text post with a link in the body. When the post federates across instances, it creates multiple backlinks to the site.

I'm fine with self-promotion, but it should be tagged as such and noted in the title if it is vibe-coded. Or, perhaps a weekly pinned self-promo thread?

I think those are some good ideas!
