I'm sure if the man brought the money to Walmart customer service the employee and the store would do everything in their power to identify the original owner.

A law that people can violate accidentally is a bad law.

Hilarious. Even wallets with id your lucky to get it back much less the cash back. and no one cares to get the cash back you just want the ids and such as its a pita to replace. georgia thinks it can legislate its populace to be like japan. you want nicer populace maybe start with better healthcare.

I found a wallet a year or so ago. Address on the ID was pretty close, so I just drove it out there myself.

Garage was open with a dude working on some project inside - definite match on the ID photo... big ol Trump sign in the yard. Drove right passed that bitch.

There's a small homeless camp on the way to work, so I just hung onto it until the next day. Yeeted that mofo cash and all out the car window and over the fence where some of their tents were - pretty sure it made it roughly where I was aiming, which should have had it found probably within the hour.

Hopefully they had a field day with his credit cards; if not, there was about $30 in it, so they at least got a nice boost from that.

Moral of the story, if you find something akin to a wallet, do a little investigating before returning it. If it belongs to some piece of human trash, uh, what wallet?

Dude just casually started a bum fight.

Hadn't actually considered that. Hopefully not. There weren't any people gathered around there, so it wouldn't have caused a rush to claim it initially. My thinking was that if there was anyone in the tents they would have heard it hit the ground and come out to investigate; or if no one heard it, it would be in a fairly visible spot when they return. Either way, again hopefully it would have been an individual stumbling across it, vs a group to start fighting over it.

...but I just pulled over, chucked it, and immediately drove off, so no idea how it played out.

"If you find me money on the ground in a store you must hand it over to the store" just sounds like wealth transfer again to me.

Or security could rewind and watch when the money was dropped and by whom.

He clearly should have brought the $10 or $5 bill he found to customer service.

Is the new law to prevent this AI firmware for wallets to scan your ID every time you put cash in it?

AA5B@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 21d

Seems pretty straightforward: he should have taken reasonable step to return it to the person on the id …. Especially since it was such a life changing amount …
