Same reason I don't reach for a drill when my teeth start to hurt: I go to a specialist and pay them to do it for me. I'm under no illusion that the state of my tactical training (read: none) is somehow sufficient to accomplish a task like that. For someone like me to have any hope of pulling that off, we'd need some winning-the-lottery tier luck for the circumstances to align in a way that a crime of opportunity becomes feasible.
If only we had large number of people who are specialized with that kind of training and are both paid and oath-bound to use it on behalf of the rest of the citizenry.

Huh. Her only charity that I was aware of was the kids books, which, while super cool, amounts to crumbs from someone with that much wealth. I had her filed with other 'philanthropists' whose contributions add up to a small fraction of what they should be paying anyway via taxes, but our laws are shit, so they don't.

I'm thinking my initial reaction was way too crass - apologies for acting shitty.
From what I've seen in the US, it varies a lot from one facility to another. For surgery, most of what I've seen the consents address the expected operation "and all other indicated procedures" that give the surgeon the discretion to add something on intraoperatively if it's justified. That said, the facility I'm at now decidedly does NOT do that. They can add an operation on if it's an emergency, but something like a fibular nail would require specific consent. ...which they should have ahead of time, cuz imaging would make the need for one pretty obvious, but dumb shit happens and things get missed... So fast forward to the operation, patient is under, skin is cut, and circulator points out "uh, hey we only have consent for tibia..." If they have a family member available who can make decisions on the patient's behalf, that person could give consent, but if not they'd probably just skip it and schedule it as a later surgery.
That's actually weirdly comforting. I always thought it was a comment on how quick humans are to just dispose of our companions once they start needing care.
And on that note, excellent work for NOT doing that and taking care of your hooved friend! ^_^
The issue is the people who do just good enough on the exams to squeak by with the minimum. Exams also don't do a great job of testing critical thinking, which is what AI use really destroys.
It's like the old "book smart but no common sense" situation, but in this case even the book smart side is taking a hit because students will just study AI excrement without verifying that it's accurate. And the common sense side isn't just undeveloped, it's actively attacked.
Just spitballing. Consent issue maybe? Like it only covered tibia, and the staff didn't notice until the patient was under / couldn't get a hold of family to have it added?
Yeah I wasn't thinking ankle at all. And even here and now, I'm trying to rotate my own leg while keeping the ankle rigid, and... yea it doesn't go very far. Never really appreciated just how large a role the ankle plays there.
