Some local officials, including Zakopane Mayor Łukasz Filipowicz, have said they will refuse to carry out the transcriptions permitted under the new rules.

Looks like someone just volunteered for EU budget cuts.

How generous of him to volunteer for right-wing austerity measures. /s

I have family from this region, it's considered Poland's Bible belt. It's also propped up by tourism. Maybe a lot of Europeans could boycott this area? Ironically, a lot of tourists come from Middle East countries which may agree with this mayor's take. Even though Middle Eastern tourists are controversial in this region. It's a very interesting dynamic going on.

Tourists are generally oblivious and view the places they visit as scenery for them to enjoy. I don't think there's ever been a tourist boycott of any place for any reason.

Canadians boycotting USA right now and there is somewhat of an impact.... That's just one recent example. You're probably right that it won't change much.

HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social · 7 pts · 10d

Thats because the US is messing with Canada, this Polish official is messing with Poles.

Tourists don't generally care about domestic issues such as this, unless theres a genocide or civil war going on, most people dont care.

it's really split between there and some 100km wide belt along eastern border, except the people living in the very southeastern corner, they're chill

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 10d (14 replies)

I haven't been to the very Southeastern corner yet. My opinion of it is that it is poverty stricken, also hard to get via public transportation.

fullsquare@awful.systems · 2 pts · 10d (13 replies)

it's one of these places where nobody wants to live including locals. the ones that do also live from tourism (and forestry/farming)

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 10d (12 replies)

The mountain hiking is awesome. I wouldn't say I would love to live there but I visit often to go hike.

fullsquare@awful.systems · 1 pts · 10d

It's awesome if you're a tourist. hardly a local phenomenon, farming and forestry got professionalized, less people can get jobs in these sectors, people move out, there's not enough traffic to sustain other businesses and you get dying villages filled with stubborn retirees

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 10d

It's hilarious because zakopane is a huge tourist spot. Ironically, a lot of the tourists come from Muslim countries that might find the mayor's politics more agreeable than the rest of Europe. 😂

It would be a round 2

AviAdi@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 10d (4 replies)

Can EU target specific regions for budget cuts? This town is a tourist hot spot. Maybe EU nationals could boycott it, but a lot of tourists come from Middle Eastern countries where they agree with this mayor. 😂

Sure can. Plenty of local governments receive EU funding, but it will take time

The European Commission blocked €150 million funds for LGBTQ-free zones, and also blocked a 42 billion Euro payment from the COVID-19 recovery fund, due to Poland not obeying EU law.[168] In January 2023, the Polish town of Świdnik abolished their LGBT-free zone in response to fearing that they would stop receiving EU subsidies.[169] In February 2023, the European Commission ended its legal action against the LGBT-free zones.[170] In May 2023, the European Commission said that the LGBT-free zones would stop receiving EU funding if they continue their policies.[171]

Though this is awesome, this will further create division in Poland with the movement to leave the EU. I hope the people of Poland aren't that stupid, but boy do my fellow countrypeeps sometimes disappoint me

fullsquare@awful.systems · 4 pts · 10d

they were already on that page, but in additon to being dipshits they're also spineless. they're choosing EU money over their religious nonsense most of the time

Ooops@feddit.org · 4 pts · 10d

We are talking about a region that is already publically announcing to reject EU law... What additional kind of division and movement to leave the EU is supposed to happen there?

RedSnt@feddit.dk · 29 pts · 10d

Poland has flip-flopped before, but let us hope it sticks this time. Better abortion rights would be nice to see next.

The polish people will need to prevent PiS regaining power, if this is supposed to last.

LOL'd at the puke reaction. stay mad, this is great news for the world.

EDIT: Reactions are a PieFed thing only. TIL. A reply down below explains it if you're still confused.

what?

I'm not sure. Was wondering if they were referring to a comment on the article, but the article has no comments, and I don't see a comment like that here on Lemmy.

Us PieFed users can leave (and see, obviously) emoji reactions to posts, and someone has reacted with the vomiting emoji. There's also 3 party emojis FYI.

Sadly the "Insert Image" feature seems to be broken on PieFed ATM so I can't show you a screenshot of the wondrous glory you are missing.
