#62: Star Trek: The Animated Series, season 1, episode 6 "The Survivor"

Written by James Schmerer, directed by Hal Sutherland.

Stardates 5143.3 through 5148.7 (late 2268 to early 2269)

"It seems, Captain, that I'm more Carter Winston than I knew." - Vendorian

The Enterprise finds a derelict ship with a single survivor while patrolling the Federation side of the Romulan Neutral Zine. That survivor turns out to be none other than Carter Winston; a philanthropist and explorer that went missing years ago. While everyone is excited to get to meet a living legend, especially Winston's fiance who happens to be serving aboard the ship, Doctor McCoy is bugged by how Winston's medical examination readings are slightly off. He initially writes it off as equipment error until random crew members (including himself) start suffering from narcolepsy and reportedly doing things they don't remember doing.

Pay no attention to the counter, I screwed up this segment of episodes so badly I'll have to fix the main post next week. So the first batch of TAS episodes are first, but I'm posting them completely out of order due to a mistake in the work file I wrote years ago.

I originally thought Winston was voiced by Shatner, but according to imdb, it was Ted Knight!!! I’d swear his first line or two were voiced by Shatner. Maybe they had to do a retake or something.

This script would have made a decent live action full hour TOS episode (except for the becoming a deflector shield part). Was there a similar story done for any of the live action series? It feels familiar, but I can’t remember. Maybe I’m thinking if the original pilot, or the salt lady episode.

I especially liked that the intruder’s species was known/recognized. The “planet quarantine” mention was a nice touch.

Also, was this the first appearance of M’Ress? Did we ever get a cameo of her or Arex in any of the other series/movies?
