Youtube is currently doing the same, it's just the ever-evolving enshitification-circle!

I think these channels are quickly approaching the $7 bag of potato chips level. People have other things to do with their time — there are too many alternatives competing for attention.

I don't know.
This salami tactics seem to be actually working.
Netflix e.g. did not only increase prices and added ads, it also still increased its number of users and revenues.

Netflix increased users worldwide. but they don’t release subscriber counts broken out for each country anymore. So while their cheap $2 plans in emerging markets added users, it’s likely they’ve lost some of their more lucrative subscribers in markets like the US. Netflix growth is down and so is their stock price.

Ad-supported plans are a way for channels to double-dip. The user downgrades when the ad free plan price is raised, and then the channel actually makes more money from the same user. The viewer is paying the same fee they did before the price hike and the channel gets ad revenue on top of that. The problem emerges when the channel starts adding even more ads because again, there are plenty of other things for the viewer to do. If you get too greedy, you drive away your subscribers.

Apple does not currently have an ad-supported plan. This price increase might be a sign that one is coming.
