How everyday household tasks impact relationships: Study of 235 heterosexual couples found women did almost 25% more household thinking, planning and scheduling

https://news.uq.edu.au/2026-08-how-everyday-household-tasks-impact-relationships

“Although this pattern was consistent across all 3 types of household labour, it was most noticeable for cognitive load.

“Women reported taking on almost 25 per cent more of the thinking, planning, and scheduling involved in running the home and organising family commitments than their partners reported.”

The study not only examined how much work each partner reported doing, but also how differences in opinions of their contributions were linked to relationship quality.

It found that when there were different opinions about how physical and emotional household duties were shared, couples reported greater unhappiness in the relationship, with this finding strongest for women.

Disparities in the perceived division of cognitive household demands were only linked to poorer relationship quality in men.

“The findings indicate that 2 people in the same relationship may experience and interpret the division of household responsibilities very differently, and these differences matter for relationship quality,’’ Dr Coundouris said.

I read an article in the past (can't find it again) that pointed out two facts can be true:

  1. Married people are statistically happier than single people.
  2. The most miserable people are married.

It's like rolling the dice--you have a decent chance of being happier, but a small chance of being very extremely unhappy.

The most miserable people are married.

A bad marriage is most definitely worse than being single.

A good marriage is one of the best experiences in the entire world.

Yes, but too many people think getting married will statistically make them happier the same way bringing a bomb onto a plane will make them safer.

Kinda similar, I wonder what the spread looks like. I am surprised it's only 25% more, to be honest. So I wonder if it's something like a bimodal distribution with grouping of couples who are around 50/50 work split and another grouping that's like the woman doing 90% and the man doing 10%. And then I'd be curious of the age and political demographics of those peaks.

Women do 100% more of the thinking and planning on lesbian relationships 🤔

Data point of one, but not the case for me 😂

Yeah that's why anecdotal evidence isn't useful when looking at stats like these.

I actually only consider anecdotal evidence now. If it hasn't happened to me, it hasn't happened ever.

Not directly related to the article but I want to acknowledge that that I've seen your posts in my subscribed communities recently and I appreciate and enjoy (is "enjoy" the right word when you read something that resonates with you, even if the subject is challenging?) them. Thank you.

Back on topic, I grew up in a home where the division of household labour was very uneven. It was not a happy home.

velma@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2d (1 reply)

That's nice of you to say, thank you :3 I'll keep posting!

My previous marriage was similarly uneven and it's unpleasant. I'm glad you're not there anymore <3

And I hope your situation is better now, too <3

Growing up my mom knew everything of our household plans, chores, stuff the kids needed, etc except when my father surprised everyone by inviting people to a cookout or something that night. And yeah they had a famously miserable marriage.

I've had to carry a lot of the cognitive domestic labor at times in my marriage (we're both women) and yeah, it's exhausting and if there wasn't a good reason my wife needed me to do it our marriage would not be nearly as happy and loving as it is.

Are men more likely to have ADHD because I have to act as a personal assistant for my ADHD housemate who cannot even remember that he's making a cup of coffee, let alone where his car is or when the rent is due. I need to remember all those things for him and it does get tiresome.

Anecdotally, my girlfriend definetly does a lot more thinking about the house, but that's because she has anxiety and literally can't stop at times. I do wonder if there's a correlation between higher anxiety rates in women and higher planning and thinking rates.
