Combat Wombat meant comparing between countries the train prices of a 250 km ride inside those countries and not comparing the prices of a 250 km ride over country borders.
And even in the beginning the question wasn't comparing different modes of transportation but directly train prices.
I paid a similar amount to that for a return ticket from Sofia to Plovdiv very recently. I was quite pissed off by how great the experience was compared to back home. After a great day out in Plovdiv I unloaded an hour plus Autistic rant about UK public transport costs on my friend sitting next to me.

That's a ~290km round trip and it cost my party of 4 <€45.
San Diego to Oxnard is a bit farther (because the coast curves) and costs $42
Our problem with trains is that there's vast swaths of the country you can't get to by train. Or you can't get to from where you are without making a gigantic circle out of your way.

The conservatives closed and sold most of the branch lines. They also privatised the trains.
Basically, they completely fucked us, long term, for short term gains.
