Europe has always had a lot of professional high end thieves, could be real. But yeah, it could be some funny business for sure. Hopefully if so the insurance company rains hell on any billionaire's bullshit.
The gentlemen of yesteryear were the billionaires of their day, and an old-school heist was to steal something for them too. Robin Hood is famous for being the exception.
Jobs like this usually happen because they already have a buyer. It'll sit in someone's "private collection" until they die, then it'll be surprisingly discovered.

You know, back in the day.....theft like this would almost fun to read about.... And imagine either a gentleman thief or old school heist setup...
But this is probably just a billionaire payment to get their hands on it. And probably bet on it in polymarket.

I think the usual routine is to take it apart and sell the individual stones to people who don't check for markings and metrics that identify them.
