Coolidge Jr got the blister playing tennis barefoot, and probably ignored it until the ensuing staph infection was well underway. People of that time (1924) who paid attention to their little injuries - wash with soap and water, hit it with some alcohol, cover it (i.e. don't keep going barefoot on it) didn't tend to die from them.

Mortality rate was higher than today but life wasn't anywhere near that extreme. Most people don't die from minor untreated infections - that's what our immune system is for.

Me neither. After a couple Godfather movies I had enough of mafia stories - I can't sympathize or relate with them, I just want 'em all to shoot each other and be done with it. But it's fun to mock their distinctive vocal pattern.

Pretty unrelated but the brief comment about Darth Vader's appearance brought back a strange memory from the early 80s.

At my work there was a "circuit fab" room - a cavernous room where circuit boards were made by plating and dissolving layers of different coatings on them. There was an array of 60 or 80 large open sink-like tanks of various fluids, many of them heated and bubbling. Mechanisms riding on rails above them moved batches of boards from tank to tank. A maze of pipes and electrical conduits ran everywhere. The whole floor was a grill for liquids to drip through. Workers wore coveralls, goggles, and big black rubber gloves. It was hot, steamy, smelly, and weirdly lit.

On one wall, about 20 ft up, was a catwalk that ran the length of the room with a door at each end. One afternoon a door opened and in walked Darth Vader, carrying a glowing light saber. He walked the whole length of the catwalk, pausing once to look down at us, and went out the other door. There was no context for this - It wasn't Halloween or anything. Just Darth Vader walking through circuit fab.

God dammit, this is like the moment the Titanic first hit the iceberg. No matter how this labor issue is resolved, it will permanently demonize Wikimedia. No matter how valuable Wikipedia is or has ever been, current culture provides no foregiveness or path of redemption after an ethical transgression. Again, dammit, I love Wikipedia and have been donating steadily for years.

Contractions aren't slang, they're another example of a way to condense speech, that didn't negatively impact anything any more than telegraph shorthand did.
