Apparently this combo is seen as insufficiently innovative by some people, evidenced by an underwhelming response.

Not sure what here is wonky. Personally my bikes just have regular ol' cable setups, no electronic anything. I guess I can see "why update that one thing without offering the latest and greatest" even if it's not something I get excited about. But I think that's what the article is pointing to
