Cage-free eggs are worse for the climate. Does it matter?

Caged eggs may have a smaller environmental footprint than cage-free eggs. That doesn’t make cages the better choice.

Also, the issue of cage-free was ALWAYS about the health/happiness of the chickens. I'll always buy eggs that I know come from chickens that aren't suffering in teeny-tiny cages.

Yeah, me and my gf are (mostly) eating vegetarian (pescetarian really but apparently that word confuses people, so "we mostly eat vegetarian and occasionally fish" is the usual phrase if someone asks), and for me it's mostly about ecological footprint, while for her it's more about animal wellbeing. So we compromise by not eating meat, and once every two years or so in the summer she buys some meat for the barbecue from a local butcher that guarantees that the animals had a good life (and the whole animal gets used, that kind of deal).

We don't need a few people that do ecological footprint perfectly (except the 1%), we need a lot of people that do it better than now (or guillotines as a backup plan ;) )

And eggs account for such a small share of global emissions that the climate cost of going cage-free is relatively minor.

This stuff should always be considered in context of priorities

This was what I was thinking. Maybe it is worse, is it worse enough that it changes the realistic plans for solving climate change? No. Probably not. We still just need to keep the fucking oil in the ground either way. Once we do that we can talk about what style of raising chickens is more damaging to the climate.

Very interesting article. Unfortunately, I have noticed that when posting the suggested title can be different from the actual one from the article. Not too sure why, probably to be more catchy for social media or smth? Anyways, all that to say that I think the original title is more descriptive of the content

Cage-free eggs are likely worse for the climate. The answer isn’t to switch back to caged ones.

Small potatoes compared to the many many other things that are bad for the environment. Keep the animals cage-free at the very least.
