How frequently you have a full plate of food… just one full plate won’t make you fat. If you have those 5 times a day, that’s where all the fat is coming from.

Presumably

"A lot on your plate" can be taken metaphorically to mean a lot of stressful things in your life. Stress can cause obesity. So both meanings of the phrase can equally cause fatness
