Born Again is my favorite Black Sabbath album.
It is the single album where Ian Gillian (Deep Purple vocalist) fronted the band.
It is also many people's, possibly even Ian Gillian's, least favorite Black Sabbath album.
This album was recorded ... um ... between vocalists. The 'band' did not intend to release a Black Sabbath album. They rented a manor and did too much drinking and driving for a few weeks (Trashed), blasted music till dawn (Disturbing the Priest), and had some high society guests (Digital Bitch). The record company told them in no uncertain terms that they must release the output as Black Sabbath. Contractual obligation and all.
Ian was famously unhappy with the way his vocals were mixed on the final release of Born Again. The recording I've linked to here "Manor Tapes" shows why. You can actually hear him, far less muddy. This recording is a bit raw in parts, but I like it a lot more than the album version.
One of the funniest parodies in the history of rock was inspired by this album and the cockups on the tour.
