Writing Club - August 2026

Welcome to the 26th writing club update!

I hope everyone has been having a pleasant late summer. The weather here has been a mix of rain and sunshine back and forth, in an almost 50/50 mix that I don't recall seeing for years. It's been great for the vegetables, anyway.

To quote from previous entries:

To anyone stumbling upon this post and wondering about the rules -- there really aren't any! This is a club for mostly the same regulars and semi-regulars, but visitors are encouraged to comment on writing, or writing adjacent, updates or share their own. The idea is to set a goal for yourself and try to achieve it by the next month's update. :)

My goal was 500 words per week, and as is becoming tradition, I feel far short of that! But I still count the goal as a semi-success again, because I did more writing than I would have without the goal.

I continue to be obsessed with Doom mapping as a way to express my (simplified) narratives, so that's where most of my creative oomph has been going. Although in conversations with a fellow writing club member, I've started to think about way to integrate dialogue and narrative into my designs (there are ways, with the modern source ports).

So I think that will be my goal for this month -- look into advanced scripting and modding capabilities to work actual stories with text into my designs.

I'm glad to have put a dark seed into your heart to make your doom mapping even more cursed! 💜 🧙‍♀️

I'm still interested in looking at any short stories if you ever want me to! Or potential fun scenarios for doom maps, for that matter.

I don't set typical writing goals because sometimes just researching something I'm writing about is just as important as putting words down for a story.

This week I've been researching the following:

  • Plants and animals from 50,000 years ago and how a medieval human town might deal with them (e.g. by planting anti-megafauna shrubs and trees with huge thorns around their yards and the perimeter of the town).
  • Sexual dimorphism in common reed frogs (LOL).
  • How to prevent resilin from drying out and becoming like glass (answer: epicuticular wax! Duh!)
  • What species of beetles have which iridescent and metallic chitin colors (my MC wants to collect them all!).
  • How a world without fossil fuels might develop after recovering from an apocalypse that happened 200 years prior.

I've taken so many notes and because of those notes, was able to hammer out about 20,000 words in no time at all. Bringing the story total to about 50,000 at the moment.

I'm also taking the time to make sure each chapter has plenty of changes to the characters and at least one or two level up/system notices that can be reflected in their character profile because I'm going to use this story to launch a LitRPG publishing platform using it.

Sexual dimorphism in common reed frogs (LOL).

How?! Like, how did you come to need details on that, in particular? 😂 I wanna know, I bet it's hilarious! (No pressure though, if you don't want to share!)

Haha, well... My character goes to the 'Classlight Ceremony' and finds out they're a [Shapeshifter]. This class is highly stigmatized. As an example, when the crowd in the System of the World Church sees [Shapeshifter] projected on to the ceiling, someone shouts, "that's a class for hookers!"

The starting skills for a [Shapeshifter] are [Flesh Shaping] and [Shape Memory]. As in, that's all they get to start. There's loads of other skills, of course, but they're considered "adults-only" and hence, my MC isn't allowed to learn about them since he's 12 (this world considers 16 an adult since that aligns with the medieval-styled guilds).

He works in a forge and the system won't let him use [Flesh Shaping] to make himself stronger because that also violates the rules of The System (because then children could make themselves stronger than their parents and possibly kill them when they make them [Eat Your Vegetables] haha). So basically, he feels useless, since he can't pick up all the skills that an [Artisan: Blacksmith] would get that make them more efficient and proficient at their work.

He's desperate to unlock skills! He's surrounded by people who have loads of useful skills and he can make his face more handsome (and his dick bigger, hehe). But what good is that for a 12-13yo?

He does some research (reads through some history of shapeshifters) and finds out that someone was able to unlock a legendary [Shapeshifter] skill, [Sex Change] by drinking a Potion of Sex Change. He thinks that if all he needs is to drink a potion to unlock the skill, he might as well (he's not trans). He desperately wants to level up like his peers and that's a legendary skill!

Except that potion costs as much as a townhouse. Since that's unobtainable with a kid's funds, he uses his deep knowledge of biology to come up with a workaround: Certain amphibians can spontaneously change their sex under certain conditions! So if he can "just get a witch to curse me into a frog for a month..."

The local hot springs area is warm year-round and contains a large population of Common Reed Frogs. But how does he know which ones are male and which are female? He needs a male to go into that terrarium with him for a whole month! In order to write that scene, I needed to know what the differences are, haha.

Ultimately, his gamble works, though he had to mostly (and painfully) use [Flesh Shaping] to essentially remove his balls just before he gets cursed. Because Common Reed Frogs normally only spontaneously change from female to male. However, males of the species do have ovaries, so if you "just disable testosterone production"... Hehe.

I learned so much about Common Reed Frogs, haha.

Anyway, The System also considers [Sex Change] an adults-only skill, so when he transforms back into a human, he gets stuck as a girl for ~2.5 years. Which causes all sorts of chaos for his family, the guilds, and his mental health. "It's only until I'm 16. I can do this."

He also ends up unlocking [Bone Shaping], [Biomineralization], [Keratin Shaping], and similar "shaping" skills thanks to his extensive knowledge of biology. This allows him/her to create objects out of their body like a 3D printer.

Eventually, they end up saving the town with some clever [Bone Shaping] against a "Sub-Plot-Level threat" (hehe) and The System rewards them with two incredible skills: [Bioanalysis] and [Vicarious Shapeshifting] (which let her shapeshift others).

That [Bioanalysis] skill ends up letting this character unlock [Chitin Shaping] and the ability to produce just about anything that an animal can produce. That means iridescent/metallic beetle chitin and resilin which is the most incredible rubbery material that actually exists.

...and then there's the chaos that occurs when a teenage girl suddenly has the power to make everyone "young again" and give every peer "perfect skin" and "enhancements" like removing the apocrine glands under everyone's arms (and functional cat ears, hehe).

Because of the [Bioanalysis] skill, I've also had to learn about loads of "pretty bugs" and bugs that might unlock powerful skills (like the ability to produce hydroquinone and hydrogen peroxide like a bombardier beetle).

So there ya go 😁

I'm not sure if I'm now less confused or more confused, but it was definitely a wild ride worth reading!! 🤩 haha

riskable@programming.dev · 4 pts · 11d

Haha, it's simple, really...

(Posts half a book of text)

What's not to get? 🤣

grrgyle@slrpnk.net · 4 pts · 13d (1 reply)

Woohooo! Game on!! Goals or no, that sounds like a super productive month. So whatever your system is it sounds like it's working.

epicuticular wax!

This was a fun Wikipedia session.

riskable@programming.dev · 3 pts · 11d

Note that the Wikipedia article on epicuticular wax only covers the plant version. Any sort of wax/hydrocarbon coating on the outside of a living creature is considered "epicuticular wax" or sometimes just "cuticular wax".

My character uses the type used by beetles to prevent themselves from drying out. They'd use the plant kind too but, "ain't nobody got time for that!" (Having to turn your skin green with chloroplasts and sit in the sun for hours to produce plant stuff is very time consuming 😁)

Researching for stories is very based and I commend you for all your effort!

livligkinkajou@slrpnk.net · 3 pts · 13d (1 reply)

I'm actually curious now to see how you tie all of this research into the story

edit: I just read last month update about the shapeshifting character, and it just got more interesting

Well the big news for me is that we finished the solarpunk TTRPG campaign book and handouts and we're gearing up to release it! It's been almost three years and I'm really excited to share it (and also to be done working on it).

I need to put together a writeup for my website, lemmy, reddit etc, and we're working on a blurb for the itch.io and DriveThruRPG pages. Andrew is reaching out to different people in the solarpunk, eco fiction, etc spaces to see if they'll give it a mention etc.

In other news I got the page on High Context Living far enough along to add to our worldbuilding resource wiki (these things are never really done but it's great to have a place to save relevant bits of info as I learn about them). Please feel free to message me with any additions you think fit, or if you'd like to add a topic!

I'm excited to go back to making one-off bits of solarpunk art for a while, to pick up the gamebook again, and to help some writer friends with setting up bookbinding versions of their books! (I help by making covers, helping them create interposed, print-ready PDFs, walking them through bookbinding their own copies, and ideally drafting tutorial on binding the books. It's part of an ongoing project to help make indie publishing a little more like indie music, with an emphasis on DIY and a rejection of trying to mimic the mainstream stuff. I'm hoping to show people that home bookbinding can be easy and produce some really high quality books with some cool/weird advantages over the mass market stuff.

ellie@slrpnk.net · 5 pts · 13d

I've had first a very unproductive month, then it got colder and I got very productive!

I'm still heading toward revising book three, but have mostly been distracted with book two and other art forms. The covers, cool stuff I want to throw in as extras, and so on. Can't really go into detail since I like to keep this account more or less anonymous, at least on a somewhat medium effort basis, but if any of the regulars are curious feel free to direct message me! And I'm happy to give feedback on cover drafts made by others, although due to time constraints I can't really offer to make covers for you. (God, I wish there were more time in a day! Or that I would exist twice, or something.)

Hello everyone!

Absolutely shit month for me writing-wise, as I've only put down a single flash fiction, but at least I sorted out the issues I've had with Kanteletar's Section C. It's all about getting to edit it, which is what I'm going to try to do now that I'm back in Italy for a couple weeks!

grrgyle@slrpnk.net · 2 pts · 10d

Hey good to hear from you! And one flash fiction isn't bad. At least it keeps you in the practice.

I hope you have a good September and good luck with the editing!!
