Luckily I've got some nephews that take a lot of hand-me-downs, but the breakneck speed of consumer electronics leads to some stuff becoming "obsolete" (read: harder to support) long before the hardware actually gives out.
Think of how you play arcade games - home console games were a lot more like that at first. You would start from the beginning each time, and the better you got the further you went, but it could take months. Most games you never "beat" but just "played" over and over. Maybe you'd set it down for a few months then start up again.
It was a more cyclical almost seasonal way of consuming media, from when we had a lot less to choose from. You'd have a handful of games between you and your friends, and just play 1 or 2 forever, until you felt like a change and swapped with a friend.
Yeah throwing out an entire computer because one little component is burnt out, or throwing out a whole component because one little connection is burnt out. And then there's even micro soldering if you want to get surgical...
Or simply throwing a computer away because it's slower than the new one. The price paid by the environment, by future generations, for e-waste needs to be front-loaded into the manufacturing process.
Otherwise companies are just stealing from the future and turning collective horizon into an unlivable garbage dump.
I care, and that was the big one. I agree language is the least important part, but online it's the most visible sign of disrespect. It goes to creating a more welcoming culture to people with all kinds of disabilities.
Were you around back in the day? It's actually been great seeing people getting less tolerant of ableist language, and behavior. The shit we use to say about our fellow people, just in the mainstream, it all went to such a fucked up culture of disregarding people just because they aren't "like us."
For stuff relating the monetization, I can see the financial motivation to cut corners or just pass off others work as your own. Tale as old as time.
But for creative little indie things that you just share for no clout? Admittedly it's rare, but I still see it here and there, like book covers for fanfic etc—that shit fuckin boggles me.
Like if you aren't doing this for money or clout, why aren't you just sharing 100% your own creativity? Isn't that the reason to share creative stuff, to share a part of your "soul" with others and hope to genuinely touch someone, across time and space?
I can even understand someone who just likes ai generating stuff and thinks it's fun and cool (I disagree, but I understand it). But then why not just say you made it with an LLM, and point out which parts are yours and which parts are generated? Why try to "trick" people into thinking they've made a genuine connection?
