Back in history class, when they told us about the concentration camps, we all asked the teacher “how come nobody did anything?”. The answer was because many people didn’t know and the propaganda was so powerful.
Barely 3 generations later, and it is raining graphic video documented evidence of absolute abuse of power on !crimes_of_ice@lemmy.4d2.org every day, and we had what? like 3 no kings protests which accomplished exactly nothing. Not to mention a mountain of evidence the dude in the White House (or whatever’s left of it) is a pedophile…
Unless a the food supply is threatened I think the complacency and apathy will continue.
I still find it remarkable that Trump and his wretched crew sold themselves right from the start as representatives of the common people, as opponents of the establishment, and all that—in other words, as the exact opposite of what they actually are.
It says a lot about the state of U.S. democracy that he was re-elected even after his every action during his first term had made it clear as day to absolutely everyone that these are the representatives of the oligarchy, whose policies could not possibly run more counter to the interests of the general public.
It really seems to be a massive problem in the U.S., even though it’s so obvious: Everything these people accuse others of, they do themselves—from conspiracy theories about a massive pedophile ring in the highest echelons of society to the claim that foreigners are to blame for the fact that the standard of living for ordinary citizens is declining year after year.
It is beyond my comprehension how these blatant lies are still effective somehow. Apparently, a good portion of U.S. citizens lives completely detached from reality.
Perhaps something like a “voting license” should be introduced—a test at a very, very basic level that checks whether a voter has at least a very fundamental grasp of reality.
The fact is, democracy requires at least somewhat informed citizens—if that isn’t the case, it simply cannot function and ends in anti-citizen tyranny, as is very clearly already the case in the U.S.

Problem is now, there is a vote for maximim evil vs just evil enjoyers.
Hopefully the dems actually allow a non-evil candidate, but that wont make money - they would rather fascism with financial gain.
Also, a hope is that voters actually do their critical thinking thing and choose the less evil this time.
Assuming a real election happens.
