xdg portal here is not gnome or gtk, it's kde it the screenshot are

What point?

waybar depends on gtk-layer-shell/gtk3. ironbar depends on gtk4-layer-shell, which is disappointing since it's implemented in Rust.

If there is an option that doesn't incur a GTK or QT dependency, I would like to know about it.

Not wayland. With x11, you have many options.

Of course waybar is for Wayland, but maybe Wayland isn't the best choice

Lots of options in https://github.com/rcalixte/awesome-wayland#widgets-bars-panels-etc though you kinda have to guess if they use GTK or not.

No tray support or other basic features. Just shows piped output from custom commands, from what I can tell.

Checked out a few other "minimalist" options from the list, and they are similar.

I'm looking for something that has a tray, and supports showing toplevels and workspaces without relying on compositor-specific IPC mechanisms. Something that can replace what comes built-in with Awesome.

No I am happy with my lightweight alternatives. Try to follow the principle "do one thing well" as much as I can. So having smaller different apps is why I will never use DMS or noctalia

I totally get your point but it really depends on what scope you define. For me, coming from Gnome and not feeling like constructing the whole shell aspect of my desktop myself, these tools do that job very well.
