I don't think I've heard Americans say 'grade 8' before, i thought they always said '8th grade'

It's uncommon, but not unheard of. It didn't sound weird to me in this context.

I think in the context of a child saying it, it makes more sense. An adult reminiscing or otherwise discussing school would definitely call it "eighth grade" or "the eighth grade."

This was also written nearly 40 years ago, so it's possible that it may have been a little more common back then (I'm not sure of that part though).
