I think in the context of a child saying it, it makes more sense. An adult reminiscing or otherwise discussing school would definitely call it "eighth grade" or "the eighth grade."
This was also written nearly 40 years ago, so it's possible that it may have been a little more common back then (I'm not sure of that part though).
To be fair, we understood the joke ahead of time (and found it to be a bit "on the nose,"/direct compared to some of the jokes/names we've heard), but their insistence on explaining the joke (in English, to English speakers) somehow made it so much funnier

Oh man, I'm learning German so the joke went over my head completely. In German, Kaufman means something like store clerk or merchant, and the kau is pronounced more like the English word cow.
Unsure if you're actually asking or trolling, but at least in the USA, in some areas, there are fishing limitations, often times requiring a fishing license. These limitations can be that you only keep within a specific size range, a maximum number of total fish, or both. That's what the comic is referencing.
The joke being that society is destroyed and what that means (to that guy) is no more fishing restrictions
I completely agree with you on the open endedness here. On the one hand, it's a nice throwback to a time when you didn't need to explain every joke. On the other hand, maybe this one was a little too vague
I would like to guess that it's more specific than that, possibly a poorly worded request for an "elephant (sized) cock" or something like that. So he ended up with elephant and rooster features.
I think you're asking about what is literally ironic in the comic. I think people confuse irony and coincidence very often (as is probably the case in the wording of the character in this comic), and the humor here is that they're laughing about the silly coincidence of losing their lenses at the same time, but while nobody is left to safely operate the plane.

On top of that, there's almost no safe walking paths by design. You would likely have to traverse major roads with no sidewalks, crosswalks, or even pedestrian stop lights.
It's an unfortunate design that many are stuck with.
But this is actually why we decide whether or not we participate in postmortem organ donation while we're alive - we make the conscious decision ahead of time. Which is still then consistent with the consent argument
