Because Europeans are just as racist, if not more racist than Americans. They see trump and say, "Wow nobody would vote for someone so stupid here." and then turn around and start saying how muslims are causing problems or w/e.

Not the same people. Their voters probably think trump is great.

Both things are linked: The US elected an unhinged, corrupt right-wing populist and his entourage of narcists using their social media platforms (which a big part of Western citizens use as main news source) to spread their propaganda. AfD gained ~ 20 % appeoval since Trump got elected and Musk bought twitter. (Despite the fact that Trump turned the global hegemonial power into a dumpster fire within not even two years). In fact the same trend is happening in all Western societies. I don't think this is just coincidental.

Frustration at an imperfect democracy where "no one listens to me" - and then that's turned outward and manipulated just enough by rightwong interests (who have a tailwind, with corporations and Capitalism often leaning right in function and lobbying).
Voters think this is an easier way to get attention than actually participating, and some of these voters will be voting this way to "scare the major parties" who they consider out of touch/corrupt (hence the whole system is broken).
...and some of the major parties being out of touch is because class consciousness only extends so far. Wealthy politicians can't realistically understand how difficult and inconvenient life is becoming for a lot of people.
Most people just want to see public services be improved, and better laws against scams and unfairness. Zoran Mamdani is right.

And when you told those fuckers to do that 15 years ago for progressive parties "lol nothing will happen, I'll vote tories lmao"

Plenty of blame to go around, with the highest levels of blame going to the actual far-right politicians and business people actively making the world worse, and a lot less blame going to lazy people who don't have enough hope to believe in the system. It's a rich tapestry.
There's a lot of thankless work to be done. Some of it includes explaining to the rightwing (in rightwing, family values, strength, and society terms - aka rightwing values language) that the progressive left actually serves their desired outcomes better than conservatives politicians and the far right can.
That's a tough and thankless job to do well, but is how a progressive majority is formed (big tent strategies need a wide net and open outreach). Most people will tell you you're wasting your time, it may be impossible, you'll never know if it worked, and everyone will hate you for trying to win over the right. But discussion between both sides is necessary on some level for winning in a democracy.
The right are currently better at moving left-leaners to their cause... and that needs to invert (so the left are better at moving right-leaners to their cause). Especially in countries that haven't elected the rightwing yet.

Idk, I've been told, very insistently, that only Americans could do this because we're uniquely spineless and evil.

which is ironically a form of american exceptionalism, which itself is a form of "end of history" nonsense
butwhyishischinabook@anarchist.nexus · 2 pts · 4h
True, although for me it's the lack of any systemic thinking coming from people who profess to be superior because of their overtly systemic outlook that really gets me 👌

precisely. everyone is susceptible to propaganda. americans are not unique, nor is america unique. all america is is a european projection of power that got so big it spun off into its own thing

System is dysfunctional and no longer processes the struggles of the masses in a productive way, so people vote for the sledgehammer with the best branding. And Europeans are racist (as are people everywhere), so the racist branding of far-right sledgehammers works on a good chunk of them. Same story as in America.

Lol Europeans electing the next Hitler party 🤣🤣 good job peeps, sure could use some guns now?
DarkCloud@lemmy.world · 6 pts · 18h
The next German federal election isn't until 2029, and plenty of European countries have guns. They're just more restricted than in the USA (and guns aren't solving the problems there either).
x1gma@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 16h
Aren't you all stockpiling weapons to protect yourself and the "security of the free state"? So, you've got ICE on your streets in unmarked vans taking people, where's that protecting? Those guns aren't helping you there either as it seems.
AviAdi@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 16h
They actually target people without guns. Once the government finds out that you have a ton of ammo they actually leave you alone. That's fucking freedom baby!
