Kind of a boring answer but surely Frieren has to be up there.

Frieren is never a boring answer! I struggle to hold myself back from just dropping a Frieren comment in every post here lol. Not sure if it really fits the shonen title though?

Reading more, shounen appears to be a demographic not a genre. But this survey says Frieren is about 60/40 men/women, and around 45 year old audience

So perhaps the publisher was just wrong lol, or is this label just useless?

The manga is serialized in Weekly Shounen Sunday, apparently, so it qualifies even by the most technical definition of shounen.

Unboxious@ani.social · 2 pts · 2d

It absolutely does.

I found myself watching the season finale of JJK multiple times, along with the Kill Bill episode. Most of Culling Games part 1 is beautiful. The latter half of Shibuya is equally pretty.

I have never heard of Saiki at all. I'm also reasonably certain that I've only ever heard of Gintama by name, never seen a scrap of it in all my time. I'm also a certified hater of AoT, so there's that.

As much as I do like Yu Yu Hakusho, I don't think I'd call it particularly rewatchable. I will agree that FMA/FMA:B deserves it's spot on the list, tho.

I do not think I like this list, but I don't think I've cared for top X lists since I was a tween some two decades ago.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on Dragon Ball, though. I've been meaning to watch it for real and have been putting it off since I got gifted the entirety of DBZ and revisited my childhood.

I like Classic better than Z and later. The power differentials between Goku and his opponents are much smaller here, so it has room to be a true adventure anime. Let's say that it was good enough to be a cult classic in Japan such that Z was greenlighted and made its way to the West. The rest is history. Don't expect the OG to be a clone of DBZ.

Oh, no, I'm aware that DBZ jumped the shark from the word "go", and also vaguely aware of the original Dragon Ball being a retelling of Journey to the West. Truthfully, I expect I will actually enjoy Dragon Ball more than DBZ because while I hold a lot of nostalgia for DBZ, in rewatching it I realized how much it's very much like a modern mythology story, where you already know the outcome (Goku wins) so there's not the same kind of narrative weight we're used to (not to mention some absolute bullshit maneuvers from time to time), but a lot of the fun is just getting to see the big, unbelievable battles and how they keep getting bigger and unbelievable-er. Dragon Ball being just an adventure story is probably going to be closer to my tastes nowadays.

Attack on Titan is definitely seinen, not shounen.

Also, you're rewatching 300 episodes??

Unboxious@ani.social · 1 pts · 3d

You're telling me that the manga that was serialized in Bessatsu Shounen Magazine isn't a shounen?

Teenage boys love edgy violent stuff.

Alexstarfire@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3d

I've rewatched Naruto multiple times. Though, I do skip the filler.

153, and I consider it a "rewatch" because I played Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure in GBA

pastermil@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 3d

Gintama got 300 episodes at least

Endmaker@ani.social · 1 pts · 3d (2 replies)

Attack on Titan is definitely seinen, not shounen.

I was surprised when I first found out too. I tend to associate politics with seinen 😅

Guess it's kids friendly as long as there's no sexually explicit content.

Unboxious@ani.social · 2 pts · 2d

I mean, it's aimed at teenagers not small children.
