(US) A stock broker gives extra privileges to online customers by withholding some tax disclosures from offline customers

If you download your tax forms from the shitty tor-hostile website of the stock broker, they give you worksheets and extra reports for dividends and FX to use for tax preparation.

Offline customers get nothing, automatically. To get a 1099 in the mail, you must call every year and request it specifically. If you ask for the worksheets and other docs, they refuse. Apparently they only legally have to give you a 1099, so offline people get the bare legal minimum.

I suppose the question is: is it legal that we must call every year to requst the 1099? Shouldn’t a 1099 be sent automatically?
