A character who is transgender. A book explaining gender identity. A story about a child trying to understand why they feel different. Information about transition. A memoir that tells a transgender person’s story.
In Alabama, those subjects are now enough to get books pushed out of library sections intended for children and teenagers.
The Alabama Public Library Service’s administrative code requires public libraries receiving state aid to keep sections for people under 18 free of material deemed obscene, sexually explicit, or otherwise inappropriate. Then the rule does something remarkable: it specifically declares materials regarding “transgender procedures, gender ideology, or the concept of more than two biological genders” inappropriate for children and youth.
Those materials must be removed from youth sections and either weeded from the collection or relocated to the adult section.
