seems like pretty big news in the m43 world, thought i'd share.

personally i think this is going to be a good release. small body, (moderate) weather sealing, lightweight, it all plays to the strengths of the portability of m43 and they still managed to cram in ibis and an evf. got solid specs all around for a reasonable price, too. honestly shocked it didn't end up being the same price as the om-5. i just suspect a lot of people are going to compare this to the pen f and feel disappointed, even though they're sort of in different ranges. it definitely has compromises (plastic construction, outdated video quality, slow sd speed, fewer ports), but it's really hard to beat that price.
probably would've bought this as my first travel camera if it was available back in the day. debating if i should get this used at some point...

When I got into photography for the second time, I started with m43, a Lumix GX80 was my camera, and I had a brilliant lens, a 14-140mm super tele zoom lens.
It was the camera I learned the most with.
A few years back I upgraded to a Lumix S5, I mostly run it with a 24-105mm f/4 lens, it is a perfect lens for most of what I do. I also have a 100-400mm Sigma lens for it.
I am looking closely at the Nikon Z series as it seems to have faster and more accurate AF then my S5....
However, I am still thinking fondly of the m43 format, and would love a G97 just for the ergonomics.
A Pen camera like this is gorgeous, and I would love one in my collection, the PEN-F m43 camera feels like a camera that got away from me, just beautiful, great performance and tiny, the only fault I could see is the lack of ergonomics, but without a heavy lens that is less if a problem

The Nikon ZR is a perfect travel camera for me.
I have a tamron 28-75mm f2.8 and it fits within a small sling bag. Add a variable ND filter and you got a run a gun vlog camera.
It's even smaller with a 40mm f2 and a 28mm f2.8 combo.

I don't do a lot video, but I do attend airshows when I can, and a dual camera setup with say a Z7III for the areal shots and a G97 for ground photos would be brilliant.
EDIT: now that I am looking further, the Fuji X-M5 is also an interesting alternative to the G97 in my scenario

I heard a lot of good things about the X-M5. I wouldn't mind grabbing a Fujifilm for a secondary body.

Yesyesyes! I'm going to Japan in 2 months and have been waiting for this to get out in time for my travel. Going to be my first m43 and I hope it'll be my way back into photography

The lack of 4k60 is probably the biggest disappointment. I'm in the market for a new EDC camera that can shoot decent video and I was hoping this would fit.
Also, be careful of the current reviews. Apparently they were flown out to Japan for a 5 day all expenses paid trip, so they may be slightly bias.

absolutely, i am currently just cautiously optimistic for now. i own the first gen om-5 and i still feel burned at how they released a camera in 2022 with micro usb and the old version of their interface. om system has definitely made some anti-consumer decisions before and im sure we'll see some more of that surface with the pen. 4k30 8 bit video is a glaring example, i just hope that's the worst of it.
