Counseling, Mental Health Provider Recommendations?

Hello,

My girlfriend is looking for a way to start receiving some counseling.

She's currently an international student, and may look at short-term services at the school, in the very least to get a better understanding of how and where to connect with longer term services, but in the mean time I wanted to see if there are any opinions regarding places people in the area have experienced.

We've also come to understand that extended insurance is generally the only type which covers counseling or mental health, so any advise or direction regarding that aspect would also be immensely appreciated.

A short background, in case it helps, she's in her early twenties, she's studying gender studies and social justice.

Preferably a service explicitly lgbtq+ supportive.

Trauma supportive care (maybe implied, but idk so I figured I'd mention it).

In-person visits preferred, as close to UBC Vancouver campus as is available, but telehealth options may work as well.

The main issues are with her parents so, if available, maybe to have the possibly for an additional individual to occasionally participate in a session. Though, this isn't entirely necessary, just might make things a little easier for her.

Just hoping to help her get some support and validation regarding domineering and aggressive parents.

Sorry to bother.

Thank you very much for your time. I hope you have a great rest of your weekend.

Back in the day, I used https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/therapists to find therapists that fit the bill for what I needed. There’s tons of filters to find a short list of people qualified to deal with what you’re specifically after. After that it’s easier to read bios and come up with people you’d like to contact/interview.

Some work on sliding cost scales, so if cost or insurance is a factor, there’s some flexibility.

Finding a good fit can be a bit of work! Be prepared to go through a couple of people before finding a great fit.

definitely agree with i_stole_your_taco; especially the part about finding a good fit for quality or personality.

There are some real lackluster pairings that can happen... and that just means to try someone else, not to give up.
