When I was younger, house centipedes and spiders terrified me. I didn't want to be afraid anymore, so I wanted to learn more about them. Found out that both beneficial and harmless: beneficial because they eat bugs and pests that can actually damage your house, and harmless because they don't want anything to do with a mammal that is larger than they are by orders of magnitude. Since then I'm cool with having them around. Admittedly, unexpectedly seeing one out of the corner of my eye still causes me to flinch, but as soon as I recognize that it's one of my unpaid housekeepers I let it go on it's way.
