Holy war just means it's done in the name of some holy believe, often a god.
Holy does not require grace or peace. That comes about from monotheists smashing many gods together, some of grace, some of peace, some of war and attempting to recogncile it as one being who ends up with conflicting motivations.
It's taken most of my life to understand how those people can reconcile the so called spiritual nature of religion with violence.
Language is a funny thing. Rational people tend to take words on their literal value before being told to look for another meaning, but some people don't think that way. Their ideology isn't so much strongly held but strongly ingrained.
I think conservative rhetoric tends to be more about tribalism than anything else. They don't see the contradiction even if the literal words they're saying contradict other beliefs they hold very strongly.
tl;dr - So long as it's their team calling for war, it's justified. If someone they care about is hurt, they're the victim. Doesn't matter what anyone else says, to them words are just other people making noises at them. It's all about signaling and tribalism.
It’s an extension of the idea of standing up for justice. You’re supposed to support everything that is good and oppose everything that is evil. In a normal everyday context, this manifests in thoughts, words, and actions. In extreme cases, it transforms into violence, but the fundamental concept is still the same.
What is considered justice or evil depends on who you ask. What are considered acceptable actions depend on the group you’re in.
What is grace? Religious books are full of gods directly ordering total annihilation of other kingdoms and civilizations to the least breathing being and interfering in such events as to give advantage to the genocidal armies they are commanding.
A holy war is never about peace or grace. It's about slaughtering the other who refuses to submit to your religion or ideology. It's consensus by way of extermination. That's why it's a war and not something else. The holy part is just an excuse based on the conceit that the leader of your cult or ideology is somehow better than the other's. Whether you believe in that god or ideology is irrelevant as long as you say you do to your side's leadership and then follow their orders or otherwise work to achieve their goals. It's all a big scam.

All over the world religions have abounded which demand Lambs or birds or even the hearts of one’s fellow humans to worship/sate/bribe gods.
Violence is not objectively “unholy” because “holiness” itself is subjective to the culture in which the acts are practiced.

It's holy because the reasons for it are dictated in their holy book and thus getting killed in said war grants you a place in paradise.
