This is even weirder imho, these are nationalists (Scots, Welsh, N.Irish) becoming independent from the UK and then joining the EU. I don't mind, I just don't understand. Generally nationalists tend to be more against joining the EU or other supranational entities.

Makes no sense. Why replace being ruled from afar in Westminster to being ruled from Brussels?

Perhaps because unlike the current situation with England, there's actually a net positive effect of affiliation with the EU.

Besides, the whole "ruled" thing was an emotive term used to goad a poorly informed electorate into barely passing an advisory referendum.

Ruled is not an emotive term. EU creates the regulations in Roman civil law. The UK is a common law country.

Civil law was literally overruling common.
