I'm guessing they were referring to a range of problems that can swell the eye shut. Injuries, infections, allergies, various causes of inflammation.

I'm not a doctor, though. Then again, I'm not sure if Dr Pettit was either! I don't know if there was even a board certification process way back in the early 1800s. Even if there was and he was, label says he established this in 1807, when huge swaths of knowledge we take for granted today were on shaky ground, if even known at all.

Yeah probably. Nobody washed their hands and children worked in coal mines. The standard for healthy living was atrocious.

Thanks for asking my question, an eye not opening for more than a day alone is a trip to the doctor now.

But I imagine a lot of issues worked themselves out without medication but these days we're just used to the quicker solution. Imagine how they'll think of a broken bone that many years later from now, or similar anyways, sure we'll do something in the future that makes this seem more likely in comparison that would seem just as odd at that side of things. Yay technology.
