I worked in a record store, and was watching that Motown Special with my roommates, when Michael did that Moonwalk, and blew our minds. We literally jumped up, and yelled "What was THAT?"
Later, they released the Thriller video, and included the Motown Special performance, including the iconic Moonwalk. We put a TV in the front window of our store, and ran the Thriller video on repeat, all day, everyday, for a few weeks. Mallwalkers couldn't hear it, but they would stop and watch it anyway, especially when the Motown performance was on. The crowd would grow and grow, and at the moment that he did the silent Moonwalk, we could hear the crowd gasp loudly, every time.
It is nearly impossible to describe the impact that single dance move had on American culture.
