The birds are Kiwi, the fruit is called kiwifruit. If you say you want to eat a Kiwi from New Zealand, you'll get treated like you're a psycho, threat, and/or moron.
The Kiwi bird is not named after the fruit. The fruit was actually renamed as "kiwi fruit" in 1959. The Kiwi bird is a symbol of New Zealand and represents the nation's national psyche. It is resolute, adaptable, and just a bit quirky, much like New Zealanders themselves.

Alternatively "Kiwi" also refers to a New Zealander. Or at least it does if you're Australian.
