I am so glad I gave myself a pep talk and booked a solo restaurant lunch today. Was going to do a solo picnic but that would not have worked. Was so anxious about being the weirdo on their own but no-one cares and I have a lovely little treat. And it's walking distance so no wet roads to deal with.

Cheers all

Pilk@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Also doing solo lunch today. I looked at the menu again and I am so excited.

Glad to know you had a good enough experience in the end, good on you for going a bit beyond your comfort zone :)

bull@aussie.zone · 14 pts · 2y

Finally home! I got to bring home all of the leftover meat so imma have turkey, pork and ham sammiches for like a week. Time to nap forever goodbye.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 14 pts · 2y (7 replies)

Looks like covid is keeping me home.

It's pizza and tv and web surfing for me ๐Ÿ˜ธ No being baited by haters, no name calling at me under people's breath. Would have been nice to see the kids tho and the young generation.

also, the Phantom Furry Toe Tickler struck again this morning while I was asleep. This is a case for Seagoon!! ( It was Ted Cat )

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Thanks, I hardly feel sick at all but I'm taking no risks with other people's health, especially the new mom and baby in the fam.

Bottom_racer@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

oh no.

Also wishing you a speedy recovery

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Damn, you caught it? Wishes for speedy recovery

Duenan@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

Oh damn. I hope you feel better soon.

Pizza and tv sound as awesome today.

Tried to sponsor a Numbat for you all, but something is b0rked. Some other day I guess. numbat in a Santa hat

Catfish@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Officially unb0rked by going to the zoo rather than the other site. Congratulations, you now have a part share in a Numbat. Merry Humbug! a receipt I hope I cut enough bits off

Pilk@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (5 replies)

Should we give it a name?

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Yes.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Not sure you can โ€˜officiallyโ€™, but for here go nuts

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I'd suggest Num-num, but with this crowd it's too easily mistaken for Nom-nom. Which is probably inappropriate.

Alamutjones@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Nimrod the mighty ant hunter, finest of numbats

StudChud@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 2y (6 replies)

Was meant to go to Seymour to camp with the fam this Christmas; I bailed last night because the forecast looked bad, and I just can't be fucked sitting around in the wet lol

Looks like more rain for all of us is coming, so I don't feel so bad, it was the right decision.

Now I have the cat purring and drooling on me, making biscuits; he seems very, very happy I am here to be his bed lol

Wishing you all a safe and happy Christmas!

::: spoiler Mickey wishes you all a Merry Christmas as well white tabby cat on lap with arms stretched out, very happy :::

Our cats are full of smoked mackeral and nipped out of their tiny little gourds

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Merry Christmas! Weโ€™ve missed you around here!

Also good call, the weather isnโ€™t looking that great for a camp unless youโ€™re really into it.

Itโ€™s amazing how your cat manages to be comfortable in the most uncomfortable of positions for sleeping.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Very good call, I just drove through that area and it was bucketing down. At home with Mickey sounds like a much better option.

Thornburywitch@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 2y (1 reply)

PSA: as of just after lunch, the DDT now has an official numbat. See post from @Catfish@aussie.zone below. The name 'Nimrod' has been suggested. I like this, but I'm sure there are other names we could consider.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I vote for Pudding or Custard.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 12 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I'm glad I decided not to stay overnight at my parent's place and can sleep in my own bed tonight. It's a lot of driving for one day, but at least I will get a good night's sleep.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I've stayed overnight for two nights because it's a fair drive, but wish I'd only stayed one - I'm pretty desperate to head home because honestly I haven't even been back in Melbourne for a week since being interstate for 13 days. And I am definitely hitting my limit of toddler/child-centred family interactions

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 11 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Well, I got the dog walk in before the rain started but it looks like it will be a long wet drive to Christmas lunch this year.

I wish everyone in the DT a happy and safe Christmas day.

Remember drive to the conditions if out on the roads, check your gas BBQ connections for leaks before lighting it, and don't use gas or charcoal BBQs in an enclosed space. Plus remember knives are sharp and to keep your fingers out of the way when chopping vegetables or carving the turkey. (does it show that I work in Emergency Services? ๐Ÿคฃ)

Salvo@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I got the lawns done (and the neighbours nature strips) trimmed just before it started raining. They are going to come back nice and thick this time for next week.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

The grass is definitely growing strongly at the moment. The neighbour's gardener (who normally does my nature strip as well) would probably have been coming today if it was not Christmas. Not sure when he will be coming next, but I have been gifted my parent's battery powered mower that they no longer use, so it is still long on Friday I will be able to give it a cut then. Weather and work will stop any chance of doing it sooner.

Llabyrinthine@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y

Merry Christmas DDT Fam! ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽ„

Dragged my sorry self out of bed to haul ass. Didnโ€™t want to be on the road when it really comes down with the rest of Melbourne. Definitely made the right choice.

Gonna do the sad sappy thing, avert ye eyes if it makes you squick.

Just thinking about what can be the difficult nature of relationships especially between families/relatives and whatnot.

The weather obviously doesnโ€™t lend itself to the best of spirits, but if what you have is good, maybe savour it that little more today, if itโ€™s average, maybe if you have it in to lean into patience/kindness a little more.

And for I suppose the rest we all have our own stories/narratives as others do and we can only control (for lack of a better word) our own little spaces. Protect them if need be and be kind to yourself.

/eof-squick

Have a great day everyone! Stay dry, safe and full!

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y

Looks like the garden got some decent rain overnight for Christmas.

I did wake up at one point overnight and could hear a strange noise and was worried the rain had done some damage or something, then realised the cat was snore-purring and all was well.

Mr Woof successfully kept all intruders out of the house overnight. It is possible that Santa made it into the chimney and gifted the possums who live there with some fruit.

the_procrastinata@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y

A happy Christmas to those of you who celebrate, hugs and care to those for whom it is a tough day, and a nice quiet day to those for whom itโ€™s just another Monday. Take care out there, wet roads and family stress can make it a tough day to drive or travel. Pats to the pets, and watch out that they donโ€™t eat anything they shouldnโ€™t. If you have to work, may your shift be easy and pass quickly, and I hope youโ€™re getting sweet extra cash.

Hereโ€™s a picture of the Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market to enjoy.

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 10 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Merry xmas to everyone, and especially those who are spending the day by themselves. I hope you make the best of the day :)

Salvo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Merry Christmas to those who choose to spend the day by themselves and those who spend Christmas alone due to other reasons.

For those who struggle this time of year, just relax in your favourite comfy chair and favourite warm blankey and listen to the rain. You can make it through to Wednesdayโ€ฆ

I'm back from the pudding lady's house. We brought little dog with us because I wasn't going to leave him at home with that weather. He doesn't travel well that's why I have to wrap him like a burrito to stop him from trying to take over the driving. I am covered in fur.

Everybody fed him. He does not like the meringue or strawberries from the pav but happy to lick the cream. We are tired now and are snuggling on the couch.

Merry Christmas to all of you who celebrate, and happy holiday of your choice! I was invited to a friend's family lunch, which was lovely, but between driving through the worst of the weather and only knowing him and his wife (and her only slightly) I am drained.
Still, everyone was lovely, I got to cuddle their new baby, and between all the food I ate, took home and bought for the solo Christmas that was originally planned I'll only have to buy milk and petrol for a week.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Solo christmas for me this year and loving it so far. Just made my self a huge breakfast of scrambled eggs with cheese, coriander and mexican spice mix and a bit a soy sauce for flavouring, a ton of bacon and bubble n squeak. Lunch is probably going to be Chicken nuggets with some sweet and juicy grape tomatoes. Dinner will be hungarian inspired hamburger patties, chips and corn and peas on the side. My day will be filled playing Star Trek: Birth of the Federation ( with TNG on in the background) and possibly Arkham knight later tonight. To all the others having a solo xmas, make the most of it, do what you enjoy, eat what you enjoy and cherish the serenity!

My online friends are busy... sigh. I do have things to entertain myself with if only I had the motivation. Things are feeling a bit stale.

One thing I don't like about this time of year is the way it's so all or nothing. Dealing with overstimulating crowds or very isolated. Lots of shopping and then everything shut. Lots of spending and then things are tight. Heaps of food and then diets. A frantic rush vs inactivity. I feel like there should be smaller more frequent holidays broken up through the year so everything isn't thrown so out of whack at the end. (I'm not even Christian.) That might force them to be shorter though and make it hard for people to get together.

Having hot tea with my dressing gown over pjs. Trying to decide if rewatching Buffy will hold my interest.

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Having grown up overseas I definitely see what you mean about it being all or nothing in places like Australia. I liked how it was where I grew up, none of the public holidays had the same stop-the-country effect so you could easily enjoy them alone or with others.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Now that you mention it itโ€™s much the same. Itโ€™s either dead quiet or super busy, thereโ€™s no happy medium of feels like and probably why I feel overwhelmed when Iโ€™m not in the mood to be trapped inside with an entire family who is loud.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Thanks for asking. ๐Ÿค— Not so bad at all. Maybe it's a false alarm. I'll take a test tomorrow. Even so, staying home was the right thing, too many at risk people in the fam.

Hmm another coffee or a glass of wine?

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (8 replies)

What did you end up having?

Duenan@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y (7 replies)

Neither as of yet. I got distracted and started to go through some boxes where I stored some stuff.

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (6 replies)

If you're still going through boxes pour yourself another glass of wine.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (5 replies)

I was actually just seeing what I had in storage.

Iโ€™m going to do both. A coffee and a red wine but Iโ€™m being out the big guns today with coffee.

The Unicorn!

I don't have any coffee pictures but here's one I just took of some kind of warship on Sydney Harbour. Merry Xmas.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Nice photo, howโ€™s the weather up there in Sydney?

Just had some coffee, oh my god itโ€™s so nice. Been awhile since Iโ€™ve tried that blend. Iโ€™m in heaven now.

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

It's nice and warm (hot earlier) but also pretty muggy. Probably would have been a good idea to go somewhere to swim and wash the sweat off but we've just been walking around the harbour instead.

Looks like one of the new Canberra Class Landing Helicopter Deck ships. Largest vessels ever put into service by the Australian Navy

maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

I think you're right. I had to look up why helicopter ships would need take-off ramps though because they were very noticeable and found this gem on Wikipedia:

The ski-jump ramp of Juan Carlos I has been retained for the RAN ships, although is not intended for use.[24] The Spanish use the ramp to launch Harrier jet aircraft, and although operating STOVL aircraft was decided against early in the Australian procurement process due to cost and detraction from the ships' main role, redesigning the ship to remove the ramp would have added unnecessary cost to the project.[33] The retention of the ski-jump has prompted multiple recommendations that fixed-wing aircraft be operated from the ships (primarily envisaged as a flight group of F-35B Lightning II STOVL aircraft).[24][34][35][36] The RAN has maintained that embarking Australian-operated, fixed-wing aircraft was not under consideration, although has conceded that cross-decking with other nations' aircraft could possibly occur.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Update. Decided to go coffee using my a big gun blend I have.

Then Iโ€™m going to have a red after.

Blend Iโ€™m using is called The Unicorn.

Posted a little bit below to another reply.

Not sure red wine would mix into coffee well but however I had had blends of coffee which have been infused with wine varieties before.

A Christmas Carol, this one with Fredric March and Basil Rathbone and other huge movie stars of the time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih5NNa6PEvA Music by Bernard Herrman ๐Ÿ‘

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 1 pts · 2y

This one had the most beautiful music of all the shows so far.

On to A Christmas Carol #7

It's hard to improve on Charles Dickens' dialogue. It's that good and all the shows use it.

"There's more gravy than of grave about you"

Every movie or radio staging chooses their own Carols for titles.

I like radio plays, I have a good imagination and can construct the scenes in my mind.

We listened to the audiobook one Christmas Eve, it's also quite good.

And now for Laurence Olivier as Scrooge, 1953 radio play.

Trying to decide if I want to play Harvestella, Mario Kart, D4, watch a Christmas movie, do a puzzle, a paint by numbers or just continue to pointlessly browse online.

Duenan@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Iโ€™m personally doing Quantum Break at the moment but was almost going to pull out Master Detective Archives Code Rain.

Hmm maybe play Harvestella?

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Mario wonder here tonight (cheers Mrs B for the Chrissy present!)
