They are comparing the Avengers movie that came out in 2019 (pre-pandemic) with a movie that came out this past weekend, I don't think it's fair to compare them.

In 2019 movies were cheaper ($9.16, compared to starting from almost $12), people (more or less) knew how to act in a theatre, and such. And today everything is more expensive, meaning people will go out to movies less.

The last spider man movie that was pre MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) was 2014. Spider man movies have always done well in the box office, the last one (no way home, in 2021) did $1.910 billion in the box office.
