Just join any instance and browse All from any app or desktop, not much to it. All helps you find nice communities to subscribe to. Once you've got a pretty good collection of communities, you can start browsing the subscribed section.
Best apps for Android are Jerboa, Connect and Liftoff. Ljdawson is working on a new app called Sync for Lemmy and i can safely say that once that comes out, it'll be the best one out there.

That's why I pay for YouTube Music. YouTube has a pretty good collection of obscure tracks and it lets you upload your own files to access anywhere.
