I guess it's fair to discount my Korea example, that was a mass resignation aimed at government admissions policy, not a union bargaining with an employer. However I still think their is a similar undercurrent and I still worry a physicians' union would have more power than most other unions.
My concern is what stops a physicians' union from bargaining over things beyond improving their working conditions? As I mentioned, physicans in Korea were opposed to a policy that will likely be beneficial to their society and collectively acted in protest. That's what makes police unions my pro-union exception. It's not their pay, but contract terms covering discipline and internal investigations. If a Banner contract stayed on pay, panel size and staffing ratios, I have no problem with it, but what keeps those limits?

I'm generally extremely pro-union, but there are some exceptions, such as police unions. I'm concerned about the power a doctors union could weild. Something happened in South Korea that's relevant. Doctors, or at least trainee doctors, in South Korea, went on strike in protest of the government increasing admission numbers to Korean medical schools. It sounded to me like they were protesting the training of more doctors than the norm, which doesn't sound like a decent thing to protest imo.
This better not end with barrels of radioactive waste sitting around military bases. They have a bad track record when it comes to toxic chemicals escaping containment.
I agree. Based on my secondhand observations, pregnancy is 9 months of discomfort in one form or another, followed by plumbing problems for years afterwards. Nobody should go through that if they don't wish to.

Okay nobody in this comment section read the paper. The authors looked at subterranean sequestration pilot studies and discussed the issues that were found. They did not suggest pursuing these types of sequestration methods were a waste of time, however engineering and policy challenges need to be overcome if these methods are going to deliver the needed sequestration rates.
First, those are rookie numbers, gotta do better. Second, how does this break down by age? Is the anti-DS sentiment spread out across the age range evenly, or is it concentrated at one end or the other? Third, I don't understand how one could be opposed to DS unless they're already fabulously wealthy and an asshole. What makes somebody anti-DS?
I think it is, at least in the US. You're asking people to be slightly uncomfortable, mildly inconvenienced, and/or be at a business disadvantage to those who aren't concerned about conservation. Furthermore, a lot of people's living situations and routines have been built around cheap energy. Asking people like that to vote for meaningfull conservation will go nowhere.
That's why, imo, people in western countries won't change their habits unless the energy market, nature, or the government coerces them. Hopefully the energy market can get them to change before nature starts making its position on the matter known to them personally. And if the government feels the need to get involved... oh boy they're going to be mad.
Side note, if you want to get a sense of the personal energy waste in the US, make a Nextdoor account and ask your neighborhood what people set their thermostats at. I was mortified.
This was an interesting video. I've been in science for many years and what they said makes sense. It seems like we've spent the last 300 years studying the puzzle pieces and now we're nearly capable of putting them together, especially if we have some kind of AI assisting.
But here's where I struggle with systems thinking, I can only mentally occupy one level of a system at a time.
Take biology for example. I could explain how chemical reactions work, then how proteins/enzymes work, then how cells work, then how an organ works, then how an organism works, and then how an ecosystem works.
What I can't really do is explain an ecosystem with chemistry in a meaningful way. They're on different levels. I think the same is true of psychology, sociology, and anthropology, I think those were mentioned in the video.
So can systems thinking bridge between those levels? Is it supposed to?
You don't change class when you become educated. You may change income brackets though. College education can turn you into a lawyer or into a doctor, but it is very unlikely to turn you into the inheritor of a multi-million company.
This got me thinking what exactly makes someone a member of the ownership class. I'd agree inheriting a multi-million company would make you a member, but does owning a small business with a few employees? How does debt factor into this? A business owner who's trying to pay down their startup loans might feel more like working class than ownership.

That's a fine idea but wouldn't it be better to build out renewables specifically to decommission fossil generation.
