I think it’s just the start of bad thinking and being anti science and against medical practice, so if they ever admit they are wrong their house of cards collapses and they’d have to begrudgingly admit maybe they don’t actually know anything about science and their whole worldview is based on lies and they’ve been misled. And then maybe they’re wrong about gay people being bad for society and climate change is real and they’ve been being stubborn asshats making problems for everyone.

Yeah these people don’t care about the harm they’re causing or just ignore it. I feel the same way I’m down for just throwing them in jail or something I don’t need physical violence enacted on them. They’re completely careless and promote the erosion of freedom and personal liberty while hiding behind culture war nonsense and (at least in US) say they are the ones preserving it. It’s the hypocrisy that infuriates me mostly.

As if mainstream platforms are bastions of constructive moderate takes? And yeah that’s one of the reasons democracy is important it’s much better than solving things through violence, but if you haven’t noticed democracy is getting gleefully eroded and some of these corporate types want it gone. I don’t believe in violence either but I’m not surprised by anyone’s comments here or anywhere else. And I’d still rather be on lemmy than a corporate platform because I think no corporation should be the invisible hand middleman for ‘the public sphere’

But Shakespeare was a living human at one point, and if an alien is making something it’s also a living organism. Or enjoying birds singing or a trail of ants grabbing food. LLMs and image/video generation is a piece of software that runs on computers that was built off of all collective human data found on the internet with no permission, and you have marketers and layman claiming it’s sentient (same people probably wouldnt grant sentience to another living organism like a bee or a fish btw) when it’s very arguable that it’s not sentient at all and you have people treating it like it is. Like…even if you like the output not caring about where it comes from is just ridiculously careless. Why not boil some rats and listen to the screams if you don’t care about the source of things as long as it’s entertaining you.

Whenever I see this opinion it makes me think the billionaires just want it for their bunkers so their great grandchildren can entertain themselves without the need of other people ever again. Imagine a world where 99% of people are dead and the rest can just make all the music and movies they want, but none of it was actually made by a human. Does it matter then? Because if not then I guess what’s the point of sustaining civilization and Sam Altman’s comments that humans take more energy to raise than a large language model start to sound like maybe humans are the wasteful thing to get rid of rather than data centers. Does it matter if it’s sentient if it appears to be? Why even bother with valuing human life if you can just have a program act like a human and ‘make’ things like music? Does it matter if you never interact with a human and your entire interaction with ‘sentient’ life is not life or sentient and just a stochastic parrot telling you convincing lies? Would you care if you only ever consumed non human content in some sort of fucked up truman show situation? Idk. If you don’t care then why even bother consuming anything human anymore at all? Just seems like a rabid devaluation of anything human. Does it matter if a llm makes you feel loved if it really loves you? Why get love from a flesh and blood human being when you can just get the feeling of love from something else even if it’s a lie?

That’s pretty cool I can only render a couple million on my 3050, and I’ve been trying to do captures of my town with a drone, gonna increase my max Gaussians and try using this.

I mean yeah I have one friend that smokes indoors still and it’s wild to be transported to the 70s when I visit her, and there are casinos where you usually smoke indoors. I just think if these models were trained on the worlds data then we should probably nationalize the data centers or just have the majority of people have affordable gpus again to self host and continue making strides optimizing the models to run on lower vram if people insist on using these things. I think it should be considered cringe to try to make money off them or use them for art, and the other use cases need to be regulated - giant scam apparatus manipulating the shit out of people, propaganda spreading convincing bot accounts, automated cyber attack attempts…ya know all the wonderful and most popular use cases benefiting humanity and improving our lives.

how decentralized is bluesky really?

I keep this link around for this question and curious about others thoughts. I’m basically fine with fediverse alternatives nowadays, I never post much anyways. I’m fine with not joining bluesky and just sticking to activitypub and remain skeptical about AT proto. People much smarter than me that actually build things in this space seem to be skeptical too.

What gives me hope is all the things that the madness of humanity can’t touch. No matter what happens life evolved and there’s so much variation it’s beautiful, and it doesn’t matter if we understand it is there or not. Star formation and supernova will continue to occur. There’s an entire reality outside of us that will continue to exist whether or not we go extinct. The electromagnetic spectrum, chemistry, microorganisms, neat rocks, all of those things exist whether or not we do. I think I just very heavily avoid thinking that centers humanity. It’s cool that we make music and have love and compassion but we also are nuts and have capacity for very sad and painful things like increasing suffering and causing mental anguish. So I just think clouds and leaves are neat and trillions of other planets exist and there’s probably life elsewhere too. Maybe they do better, or maybe it’s not intelligent life like us at all and it’s just a bunch of weird creatures just being neat. A planet doesn’t even need life to be interesting there’s entire geological formations on Pluto and weather systems on Saturn larger than our planet. Imagine the moody clouds not even made of water vapor just making the craziest looking sunsets on Jupiter and it exists whether someone is there to see it or not. I think that’s pretty cool that basically all of reality exists completely separately from our species. Completely untouchable by religion and politics. As for the religion and politics, idk I keep myself and those I love safe. I continue to express my dissent and my disagreement and remind myself that a lot of these ‘arguments’ are old as hell and humanity has been dealing with them for a long time and you probably won’t solve them. I hope you get more acts of kindness and less exposure to the cruelty.

It’s not a ‘goal’ there is no purpose or goal to evolution or life…it’s a property of life that it propagates itself but that’s not the goal, reproduction is a function or a property of life. You could also argue the ‘goal’ is survival and there are sticks and carrots poking at making an organism survive, but again it just sounds like you’re misunderstanding how those words are used in academia, you’re doing the same thing with fitness. Fitness in evolution isn’t about running or being strong it’s how well an organism functions in its environment and what makes an organism fit varies from organism to organism and environment to environment.

I like nature but see it in both ways. It can be creepy and scary and gross. But I don’t know, mostly I guess it’s the variety of visual stimuli and noises that I like. It’s all just so neat, the shapes of plants, shiny hummingbirds, how big it all is, moody fog in trees, finding a weird bug or plant you’ve never seen in your life, seeing things that are explicitly not made by humans, I find it comforting. Human made stuff is cool but also if that was all there was I think it would be pretty depressing, it’s nice that things exist outside of our making.
