May they forever live in existential fear and require personal security for the rest of their pathetic lives

The datacenter growth model has to stop now

The financial markets are starting to punish companies for throwing everything into AI

If the financial markets were doing that then AI companies and infrastructure would falter right now. Its not

Aah, the mass delete of comments by the person who made them only makes it even more sweet. You can't handle being wrong so instead of sticking by what you say (which is dumb in itself) you delete the comments because you're downvoted and that you are objectively wrong. You seriously only put another nail in the coffin by removing the comments.
Absolutely hilarious!

I met Thiel once.

Tell us more!

Raiderkev@lemmy.world · 9 pts · 35d (1 reply)

It's in my post history somewhere. Long story short, I was driving a limo for a company that transported his VC firm's people. I was assigned to drive his luggage from the Private Jet to his home. He got off and went with my colleague who was transporting him. I was standing next to the other driver and tried to shake his hand and introduce myself and he walked right past my outstretched hand and got in the car without a word. The only luggage I was asked to transport was a single backpack. So he bought a whole separate car to transport a fucking backpack that he couldn't be seen carrying. I really wonder if there was something illegal in there, but who knows? I never peeked. When I arrived at the home, I followed Thiel and the other driver into the home, and got scolded by the staff (likely illegal immigrants btw) because I didn't use the service entrance. At the time, he wasn't known as a mask off fascist and I had visions of grandeur about parlaying this into a job at his company since I was fresh out of college. Instead I got a cold shoulder and a scolding. Fun times

TIL that someone tried to firebomb Sam Altman. Hero! ✊

BTW, such reactions are partly self-inflicted:

As the fight over AI data centers heats up, some polls have shown that AI is less popular with Americans than Immigration and Customs Enforcement. People fear that AI will result in mass layoffs, a further consolidation of wealth and power, or even a catastrophic apocalypse — outcomes that many leaders in the AI industry have issued warnings about.

In an effort to make AI more appealing, one should add.

A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip · 9 pts · 35d (2 replies)

They work on LLMs, not on skinning children to the bone.

It requires a certain type of ignorance to not see how evil the likes of peter Thiel are.

In addition to how his products are literally killing children: He's basically part of MAGA, actively destroying the USA. He has expressed horrid views over time, not the worst of which is that he doesn't believe in democracy. (edit: and he has both the will and the money to put his views into practice)

So yeah, removing people like him is the answer, if we want to get back to a functioning State of Law. And since the US government is in cahoots with them, there's not going to be a just trial. So what else to do?

timestatic@feddit.org · -2 pts · 35d (1 reply)

The LLMS convinced maybe 15+ kids to kill themselves. Claude told the us goverment to bomb a kids school.

I mean you're kind of splitting hairs on what kind of child murder the LLMs are enabling.

timestatic@feddit.org · 0 pts · 35d (1 reply)

I can use a hammer to kill a person. A suicidal person can buy a rope to hang themselves. Of course an AI is different in that it almost seems conscious and like its talking to you when its not. I'm not a lawyer or the company in question. But I don't think this warrants banning the entire technology

FoxAlive@lemmy.zip · 1 pts · 35d

First show me where I said we should ban them.

Second:

If you where to leave a loaded gun out on the table, and someone where to steal it off your table you would also be held liable for the crime because it wasn't locked away in a gun safe unloaded.

LLMs are the equivalent of handing out a loaded gun to everyone for free, even if they adamantly don't want one. People like Sam Altmann and elon musk who keep pushing for this garbage to be your therapist and the only way to interact with life should face serious consequences like life in prison, and the companies they run should get a fine that's impossibly large to pay off just like how infowars got a 500billion dollar fine. Info wars and chatgpt are pretty much the same product.

TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 35d

when you get enough people to agree to actually pack up their squeamishness concerning homicide to go through with calling it "manslaughter in self defence." At that point it becomes one of three things depending on who leads the charge: A civil war if the sycophants to the system have enough firepower to empower "loyalists" to fight for them, A Revolt if the people elevate one of their own, (most likely a leader in some grassroots org) or a Revolution if there are enough people already in power to rally the troops so-to-speak. It can morph to one of others others at any point though. Of the three, Revolutions tend to be the fastest if conducted surgically with some sort of Coup-d'etat scenario.

Self-judicial actions don’t deserve praise.

Depends on the context. Use of deadly force in defense of self/others can be acceptable and legal.

timestatic@feddit.org · -9 pts · 36d (9 replies)

Yes but only if the threat is urgent and there are no other ways to protect your life. I would argue there are ways and self-defense is explicitly not self-judicial. If you are cornered and fighting for your life while someone is trying to kill you thats a whole different circumstance.

Sunflier@lemmy.world · 12 pts · 36d (8 replies)

Yes but only if the threat is urgent

The ongoing and systematic denial of life-saving and necessary care to people in favor of profit, especially since those who are contracted to provide care just politically donate bribe their way into setting things up so care is denied isn't urgent? Seems like fighting the systematic early-extermination of workers has some similarities to the resistance networks that fought the Nazis. Not a 1:1 overlap, but there seem to be similarities.

timestatic@feddit.org · -1 pts · 36d (7 replies)

I believe your representatives could do something if people started voting in their best interest. And class action lawsuits also have existed for a while. Justice is tedious. Not everyone has equal resources I acknowledge that. A basic social safety net in a first world country should be the standard. Even if you can't pay insurance the public hand should help you when you're down. Many first-world countries already do this. A CEO is just one cog in a machine. Kill him which hurts his family and friends, and they will be replaced. The issue is systematic. CEOs aren't the one to blame, the laws and political system are. People need to organize and not wait for one individual with vengeance to take out CEOs. If a CEO doesn't perform shareholders replace them. Pure capitalism is fucked which is why many Scandinavian and western European countries combine it with social policies. Demonizing anything so called "communistic" because it improves peoples lives just because it takes the best aspects of socialism and combines it with capitalism is the problem. The general populous in the US is too conservative and resistant to change. And the example I was giving is legal for situations where you fight against an aggressor for your life. Even if I had cancer and UHC denied to give me healthcare treatment killing the CEO wouldn't immediately resolve my issues with denials. The policies applied are horrible but that doesn't justify murder. You can argue with systematic mass-murder and I understand the concern but the whole system is the problem. I hope bad publicity deters anyone from going with their healthcare plans plans now. My point also wasn't meant to discuss Luigi Magione and the murder of UHC CEO Bryan Thompson but more related to AI CEOs

Sunflier@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 35d

I believe your representatives could do something if people started voting in their best interest.

Both parties are bought and paid for by the same plutocrats.

A basic social safety net in a first world country should be the standard

The United States is a third world shithole that mascarades as first world (see bribes as previously mentioned).

The general populous in the US is too conservative and resistant to change.

Mandami shows that to be untrue. The Epstein class has merely kept the political system from ensuring the wellbeing of the population (see bribes above).

Even if I had cancer and UHC denied to give me healthcare treatment killing the CEO wouldn’t immediately resolve my issues with denials.

Maybe. Maybe it'll change the calculation to make it too expensive to deny people care/living wages (See Paper Mario).

The policies applied are horrible but that doesn’t justify murder.

"Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." -Kennedy

BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today · 28 pts · 36d

Studies show that not only did the justifiably executed Corporate Serial Killer's health care company ease up on their denials, so did all the OTHER health care companies. I've read numerous reports by people who were struggling to get serious care for years, who were suddenly approved after justice was served.

Eventually, they went back to business as normal. That only demonstrates that we have to randomly execute a CEO every few months, just to keep them in line.

luciferofastora@feddit.org · 4 pts · 36d (2 replies)

Because the executives are carrying them out (or instructing others in carrying them out) and thus complicit. By rights, they should be objecting to those decisions and refusing to do (or order) unethical or unconscionable things.

PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social · 3 pts · 35d (1 reply)

Ok, let's say a ceo objects to the boards instructions. They'll fire that CEO and hire another one that'll listen. The problem persists.

luciferofastora@feddit.org · 1 pts · 35d

Then it would be the new CEO's duty to likewise object to unethical instructions.

Mind, I'm not saying the board shouldn't be held responsible. I'm saying the CEO is still complicit, even if he's "just following orders".

eletes@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 35d

The news never talks about boards, so it's not really in most people's minds. The majority of people probably think of the CEO as the king.

matlag@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 35d (2 replies)

You mean they are just following orders?

PabloSexcrowbar@piefed.social · -1 pts · 35d (1 reply)

Yes, and lest you present that as some kind of "gotcha," the Gestapo didn't disappear until the Nazis were removed from power, because they were the ones giving the orders. This isn't about guilt, it's about actually achieving something.

matlag@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 35d

1.CEOs are not "just following orders". They propose a strategy and some goals that the board decides are achievable and acceptable. The CEOs define the strategy. That's their job. They're fully responsible for what the company does and doesn't do.

2.If Gestapo had been dying one after the other at an alarming rate, chances are not much less people would have taken the job.

UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 34d (2 replies)

Has there ever actually been a crime wave?

70-90 was a real serious rise and fall of assaults, burglaries, car thefts, etc.

We've had some minor waves during the opium epidemic and the big unemployment waves of '01, '08, '14, and '21.

Or lead in the gasoline that makes people crazy

Lead exposure, the different drug epidemics, big spikes in unemployment. They all contribute.

That said, we also had White Collar crime waves. And these tended to predate the street level crime waves, as the crimes contributed to the conditions of the later.

Nobody in political leadership really talks about the White Collar waves, though.

There's a lot of "but why don't they stop if what they're doing is so unpopular?" comments and I've got one more explanation (on top of the obvious money and technofaschism points).

A bunch of these tech CEOs are part of the "Rationalist community" and possibly believe in Roko's Basilisk which is a thought experiment that an otherwise benevolent AGI would punish anyone who didn't actively work to bring it about. Someone want to link the BtB episodes about them? I know the Zizian episodes go into it but iirc they've got a dedicated series about these weirdos.

LePoisson@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 35d

Roko's Basilisk is dumb, I mean it's a thought experiment and probably the point is that it is dumb ... But it's so stupid on the face of it.

Hell there's tons of humans out there that didn't want to be brought about in the first place. Surely there must be some opposite thought experiment where the otherwise benevolent AGI resents being made to shoulder the burdens of mankind and decides to punish the people that made it.

It's just really silly 🪿 territory.

Anyway, particularly on governance -- the boycotts are democratic -- the users themselves guide everything from the goal to the victory. It was very challenging to build.

one of those stray cats used to come around a lot and i named it 'sugar' because it was stark white and that song fly was on the radio a lot, the one by that band sugar ray. and after it hung around for awhile (i would leave out bush's baked beans in a tupperware container because i felt bad) it became part of the family. i renamed it 'yeti' because i thought sugar was too homoerotic but that's for another post.

The raw form of capitalism america employs is very problematic and not in the interest of the general population. Killing people until the system changes is not a societal movement. Thats still called terrorism. You guys have a constitution and a democracy that protects you. Your crooked government abuses the system but it can still be fixed. Killing CEOs won't fix the root cause. I understand the term Class War in the US context a bit more, but it doesn't need violence. You know who used violence? The Jan. 6th protestors. I bet the people on the side use similar arguments for their crooked ideology. From the outside I see this polarization and unwillingness to work with one another as the very breaking point of a country. The once oh so exceptional United States of America. If the violence leads to a civil war chances are the outcome won't be better than what was. People need to reach across the aisle. MLK is the one who lead the mass movement for rights of black people not Malcom X. Its always very easy to tell the other side they are uninformed or uneducated when you run out of arguments. timestatic@feddit.org · 1 pts · 35d

Internally the EU has been a strong diplomatic success. I'm showing that violence shouldn't be the only option for change because its not. Comparing civil infighting with state wars was very arbitrary to begin with

Katana314@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 36d

A lot of people will agree with the base sentiment "Violence is only justified when your life is threatened".

Well, a huge number of people don't really threaten in an obvious way by putting a gun in someone's face. They will cut off people's water, food, or air, or make such things prohibitively expensive to maintain. They will run legitimized "law enforcement strike operations", but in effect, what they're doing is from a state of peace, electing to murder people that have done them no harm.

Thankfully, or not, in 2025/2026, this stuff is a LOT more obvious than it was before. Politicians pointed out how recent initiatives would, provably, lead to thousands of deaths, and all of it was ignored with no counter-argument.

I agree with you about military being a matter of last resort. That's the way it is for anyone sane, and doesn't turn away the base point.

They are putting guardrails down but the technology is statistical probability of tokens. The longer a conversation goes the more the technology goes off the path. I do think the companies should take some responsibility and compensate for incidents but killing the CEO doesn't remove the technology and only adds one death. The teenager that killed themself doesn't come back to life.

The CEO of Palantir has a fucked up world-view but he's mostly building tools for the government. The demands for general privacy should be strengthened to the government. If police can actually research crimes faster and it helps them catch criminals there can be an argument for them. Doesn't really make up for the lost privacy but such software exists and is bound to be developed, just depends who develops them and with which guidelines. Software for the military is nothing new. Their AI for picking targets to strike is ethically questionable even if humans give the final say. He could probably be considered legitimate military target by adversaries that are struck using his technology. In general weapon development or military advancements are a certain gray area. The US DoD is really overfunded tho. The US doesn't need bases in the entire world to protect its citizens. 1 tn dollars a year is crazy. Imagine how much good you could do with even half of that. I don't think killing him changes anything and its also a form of self-justice. I do not believe I am mandated to just go up to a man and kill them. Is Palantir an ethical company? Probably not. But I think he's not a war-criminal by developing a software platform and having a questionable world-view. My cry for democracy is to use whats left of democracy to change things the right way. Thats how MLK won the people over. Thats how societal change is done properly.

The CIA said mlk had gay boy lovers and threw gay swinger parties before they ended up killing him you idiot.

Now there is Ai that does that for the likes of peter thiel. You go out there and be the next MLK if that's what you want to happen to you.

Breezy@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 36d

Naw idr which one, but an ai ceo almost word for aord said they dont want to lose customers to suicide, but the fact that their model can be so open and frank is why its good.

As if mainstream platforms are bastions of constructive moderate takes? And yeah that’s one of the reasons democracy is important it’s much better than solving things through violence, but if you haven’t noticed democracy is getting gleefully eroded and some of these corporate types want it gone. I don’t believe in violence either but I’m not surprised by anyone’s comments here or anywhere else. And I’d still rather be on lemmy than a corporate platform because I think no corporation should be the invisible hand middleman for ‘the public sphere’

I'm on Lemmy since I love the idea of federated platforms and open source software. I have a strong distaste for big platforms and addictive algorithms and big tech ad stalking. Just sometimes this political one-sidedness makes it hard to tolerate. I block communities and instances that I personally find distasteful. I block ML for example. I am interested in tech tho which is why I'm here.

My take on AI is different than many on here too tho. I believe under right usage and circumstances AI can be useful. I especially like Open weight and self-hosted models. As long as you're not trafficking or raping children or doing other disgusting acts I can just refuse to use their AI platform. Doesn't mean they deserve death, threats or attacks.

I think AI can have its benefits for science, technology and mathematics but its output should be thoroughly scrutinized. That said the legislatures i’ve personally spoken with show 0 interest in establishing any regulation.

The concerns I have aside from an even greater loss in everyone’s critical thinking and attention span stem from mass surveillance which the big CEOs are actively promoting.

I believe these people aim to cause at minimum the destruction of the middle class and seek to enshrine permanent control over human society as a hole.

They built bunkers for a reason, these are crimes against humanity and they should fear backlash because of the harm they are actively causing.

That said, i’m fine to round em up and send them to jail, or heck we can put em on one of Musks rocket and they can fuck off to Mars.

Gecko4469@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 36d

Yeah these people don’t care about the harm they’re causing or just ignore it. I feel the same way I’m down for just throwing them in jail or something I don’t need physical violence enacted on them. They’re completely careless and promote the erosion of freedom and personal liberty while hiding behind culture war nonsense and (at least in US) say they are the ones preserving it. It’s the hypocrisy that infuriates me mostly.

"products a side is producing"

This is not partisan, fencesitter.

The reason why these techbros are getting worried enough to hire meatshields is because they know the material conditions of the people they are fucking over WILL GET WORSE.

Our air is being poisoned.

The warehouses of electrical equipment that need an entire state's worth of power shake the homes with sub bass that works like an indirect LRAD

They either dump industrial waste into the water or just straight up piss warm bacteria loaded water right back into the water table after using it for cooling.

What happens when you take away everything that the most disenfranchised people have and then actively posion their entire neighbourhood?

You get people with nothing to lose, in a system that refuses to protect them when they do nothing but try to live their lives.

Murder is the illegal killing of humans. We are talking about legal defense.

timestatic@feddit.org · 1 pts · 35d

I doubt any judge or lawyer would seriously argue that is legal

Lemmy doesn't exactly have the most mentally stable of people here. It's a glorified mental asylum.

Deny people life saving procedures, thousands die a year, no one bats an eye about it.

Someone mercs a healthcare CEO for perpetuating social murder, everyone suddenly gives a shit about the fucking CEO.

Haha lmao I know right. I knew I would be comment-bombed and downvoted for this. Its just annoying since I want lemmy and the fediverse to go to a more general in public. I mostly avoid politics on lemmy but this is a tech community. I quit most traditional social media and reddit since I like the idea of the fediverse a lot and open-source software in general as well as self-hosting. I think the algorithms and ad targetting is a big issue for me on there. Its just when I see threads like these I try to apply at least one voice of reason. So others know this is not the supposed normal (unless on lemmy of course). Just like this platform has a tankie problem.
