I'm not great at Linux, did programming for most of my life in Windows, but so far I've gotten by for about a year in CachyOS (uses Arch). Having it work so well in gaming has been a strong motivator.

There’s a thousand criticisms of US politics I agree with, that make sense; but the one thing that has never made sense to me is why the Republican Party exists.
It’s a horrendous monster with no visible redeeming values. The Democrats can live off “We will fight the monster!” and be opportunistic scumbags, but no explanation given for why that monster exists.
As long as even some of the democrats build up a platform of fighting that monster, and have to pretend to do it, then it’s better than those monsters actually being in charge. I’m not a fan of handwaving the “hard fact” that group still continues to exist as a pure enemy of American success through today’s age, and it turns almost anything else into a lesser evil.
One of the reasons horror is celebrated is because it’s art imitating life. Often, it makes people feel uncomfortable, and the way they express that fear is worrying life will imitate art.
Sadly, it probably has happened before, but never without a long basis of hatred and mental health issues. The bigger question to me is how many people would like to see less of horror tropes, to the point that we don’t see violence against women on screen - but the rate of it in our alleyways remains unchanged.
We can think of it a bit like Childish Gambino in “This is America” taking a gun from his pants, shooting a bound prisoner, and then gently putting the gun on a pad. It’s not supposed to feel cool. It’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable because it reflects something we don’t like to talk about. To me, making casual jokes surrounding fictional killers isn’t going much further.
And, even more murky is that that genre is often very popular with women. They have a fascination with the dangers that are sometimes a real possibility to them, especially when they can be expressed in an over-the-top way safely behind a screen.
I’ll have to be cautious about this advice, as I’m not a therapist, but: Ask for help with something. Any task they could be more qualified for, or that you need a second person, rely on them a bit. When they help you, thank them wholeheartedly, even with a gesture like a gift.
People like to feel that they’re needed and appreciated, that they have some worthiness in people’s eyes. But don’t fault yourself for lack of this action - it’s impossible for everyone to do this for everyone they know, and self-harmful minds do a lot to hide themselves.
I’ve tried, man. I at least got better at socializing in a common atmosphere, so I don’t feel so distant, but many people just don’t reciprocate communications. I invite a repeating occasion for people, and they’ll need 8 reminders or just not show up, to the point I don’t bother. When I realize I’m always the initiator, I decide that connection isn’t important to them.
God forbid a deeper need like confessing to traumas or needing emotional support. Some of the slightest favors I’ve asked of people have been too much. All the “above and beyond” actions I’ve ever seen in my life where people do things for one another have been in fictional media, never between actual human beings.
Oh, this is just one of them; there should be two other keyholes. When the three medallions of the Founding Patriots are reconfigured into their true form as Keys of Genesis and inserted in these keyholes, they unlock the way to the Path of Radiance, at the end of which is a power capable of turning back the Antichrist.
Although, it’s hard to tell from the photo; if it’s brass, not copper, then it’s just an old furnishing anchor.
Oh - They made Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, too?
I played that game on PS+, without even knowing the central conceit. It was interesting for a while, but it does feel strange that one protagonist is using a sword while the other is just punching.
Not even really a patient element because it’s free, but it’s been getting progressive additions.
If you like Ace Attorney, playing as a lawyer to solve crimes by pointing out contradictions and shouting “Objection!”, then fangame Gyakuten Live has that in spades. When it first came out, it was mostly a silly one-case concept of “What if the characters from my favorite school anime held a class trial for fun”. But it’s been going for 4 cases now, each one escalating in size and stakes, up to the current one that deals with a genuine murder. There’s been no laziness of reuse, with pretty much every case having a new prosecutor, new soundtrack, various case-relevant incidental artwork, etc.
Its one doom in popularity is you need to get it from Itch.io - it’s murky enough in copyright that it likely can’t go up for sale.
I’ve played both versions. Theres maybe a few choice elements I liked from the original, but it was still a very good remake; actually kind of brought down the tongue-in-cheek elements a bit to feel more horror at times.
One issue I've found with stealth games is that the concept of a lone commando outsmarting and sneaking past 30+ guards is pretty unbelievable to begin with, unless the player controlling the commando is actually a tactical genius. So, games tend to have to play pretty unrealistically in order to make the result playable by average players (idiot guards, x-ray vision, generous interpretations of darkness, super movement abilities, etc)
Something I think could be further explored is a game that explores a mechanic of "Plausibility". Stealth long accepted that guards would react to footsteps. Breath of the Wild including a noise meter helped me think "Hey, why is that? This is a big compound with a lot of people that's been quiet for the past week - wouldn't they assume the footsteps are their friends?"
Another concept that I think was explored in a very janky way but could use a second look is the game Shadwen. It's not a great experience, but it has the interesting idea of combining stealth with Superhot and Braid - you get full control over time, including time only moving when you do, and can rewind instantly from a failure. The game even shortcuts "spotted" phases by giving guards instakill crossbows, so the remedy to being spotted is just to rewind. The fun, then, is in creatively engineering the one-shot stealth circumvention you had in mind, even if a mispositioning messed it up the first 6 times (because it only took 15 seconds to get a successful effort).
A nicely summarized mantra to push back on the paradox of tolerance. Many people use free speech, free market, etc, as an excuse to impede others, and this is my response to that.
Now I’m wondering if this might not have happened if the RAM crisis never happened.
They have a lot of upkeep on the backend hardware so people can use these services. As server costs go up, it’s likely they’re now strongly motivated to kill the appeal of their own service. In another future where hardware costs were still reasonable, maybe they would’ve let it go.
I’m always a sucker for scenes that show people are better than people give them credit for. The scene in Spiderman 2 when the subway car passengers refuse to give up a fainted Peter to Doc Ock is a good example; another is in The Dark Knight, when Joker tries to get two ferries to detonate the other one’s bombs, and neither does.
I am well off, but not well off enough to lift other people out of their misery. I contribute what I easily can, but every day I wish for the world to change, even if that means having less income as a result.
I think the main difference is, in places like the Netherlands especially in low-traffic neighborhoods, they would build yield signage rather than stop signs. America has a lot more of the latter, primarily because of the abundance of speed-demon cars.
