Omarchy is basically where someone takes Arch Linux and says "I want it to have this window manager, this terminal emulator, these programs installed by default and to have this configuration" and shares it with other people. Since Arch by itself is pretty bare-bones, this sort of thing can be useful for people who want to use Arch but don't want to spend the time making a functional system. Since you're using NixOS, I'm sure you've seen other people's .nix files being shared. This is similar to that, but more formal and because Arch doesn't make it as easy as Nix, it's shared as its own distribution instead.

Because the goal of Omarchy is just to make something bare-bones into something immediately usable, it's more meaningful to compare NixOS to Arch Linux directly. The most fundamental difference between the two is the package manager, so the way software installations are managed. All package managers have to (usually) download a package and, if needed, its dependencies, extract it to somewhere on the file system where it can find it, run an initial setup script, make it so that you can run the executable by name instead of needing the whole path, and do some bookkeeping so that it knows what is installed, and so, what needs to be kept up to date, what can be removed etc. But there are different approaches you can take to achieve this.

Nix, as I'm sure you're aware, is a declarative system where you write a program (even if it doesn't always look like one) in a functional language, and when you update the system it runs that program, which outputs what is basically a list of packages (among other things) and then it compares that list to the installed packages and installs/uninstalls/updates packages so that it matches the list.

On the other hand, Pacman, the Arch Linux package manager, is a more traditional imperative system, where you explicitly tell it to install/uninstall/update packages.

There are other differences, like how Nix can have multiple versions of the same package installed, but Pacman only supports one, and there are differences in philosophy between package repositories on when packages should be updated, whether to allow proprietary software etc.

Sure, someone is going to need to write the firmware for the machinery in factories regardless of copyright protections, but who's going hire animators if they can't sell the final product or monetise it in any way without immediately competing against their own work? People who make commercials? Real bright future you're depicting there.

But more importantly, aren't you forgetting something fundamental here?

This is not just about the artists, it's also about me. And by me, I mean everyone, including artists, because they don't just create art. Most of the art I enjoy is mass-produced: books are, films are, video games are. If those become economically unviable in the current economic system, then my art appreciation would basically become occasionally going to a concert or museum, and going through humanity's backlog of works. Certainly, that backlog is large enough for many lifetimes, but while Cold War analogies are still relevant to some extent, it sure would be nice to enjoy something that speaks of today every now and then.

Artists who are employed or do contract work are often hired because someone is trying to make money off something that makes use of their work, and their ability to make money off that often depends on copyright. So it's still ultimately a dependency on copyright, just with one layer of separation in between.

That leaves artists who make an income from doing some kind of performance, like concerts or plays. I guess that doesn't really require copyright, but it's a pretty limited subset of artists for whom this is possible.

At the same time, though, as long as the economic system remains what it is, copyright is often the only thing that allows artists to make a living off their work, even when its implementation has many problems.

You can say that we should focus on changing the economic system then, and sure, but that's not going to happen tomorrow and in the meantime I'd rather not live in a world where art is economically unviable.

I think you may be overestimating how vital it is to have read all prior chapters to enjoy the latest chapter. Especially Detective Conan where most chapters are standalone crime procedurals and you'll pick up a good amount of the premise through cultural osmosis.

But also, think about it: if you're a Japanese kid who starts buying Shounen Sunday (though nowadays they would probably use the app), most of the series in there are going have been running for a while, no matter when you start. You're not going to just ignore the bulk of the magazine that you bought with a significant portion of your pocket money just because you haven't read the earlier chapters.

Any information that whatever you're working on hinges upon, you need to already know and have confirmed before you start working on it. So not only did you need to look it up anyway, only you know what aspects of that information are most important for the goals of your work. Of course, there can also be less vital pieces of information that you may consult as you work, like maybe you want to compare the size of something with football fields, to make it harder to understand. Undoubtedly an AI can do that for you, but in the end you still need to look it up to verify it, so you haven't really saved any time or effort.

It's a similar kind of story for things like generating PowerPoint slides. Slides based on what? An article? The script? Slides that just summarise the prose make for a terrible presentation and aren't any better as a starting point for one. Also, anything that can be described using less time and (cognitive) energy than to just write it in Mermaid code, isn't worth making a diagram out of.

At that point why not code in Notepad instead of relying on the stupid machine assisted IDEs?

This is comparison makes no sense, because an IDE is the very opposite of AI. There is little value in a person manually performing the same algorithms over and over again, other than maybe for a learning process. So if they can be automated, it just means that people can focus their efforts on doing the work that requires, you know, personhood. AI is the opposite in that it's useless for procedural automation, and the only thing it can do automatically is the kind of work that can only have value if a person is doing it.

First draft of what? The AI* doesn't know what you're trying to make, so to use it, you first need to write a prompt to convey to it what you're trying to convey. If what you're trying to make takes the form of prose, there's your first draft already; there's nothing the AI can add other than padding and replacing your voice with a psychopath's. But to begin with, if you have the skill to turn a first draft into a final product, it's almost always going to be faster to just use that skill to create the first draft yourself instead of trying to convey to an AI what it's supposed to be like. If it isn't, it's something that's so easy to describe that there's either no value in making it or those few words are already the perfect way to convey it.

Also, this just completely undermines the whole thing:

The sole virtue AI arguably has, is its accessibility; anyone who can read and write a supported natural language, can make use of it. But the moment it starts requiring expertise, that accessibility becomes worthless. To anyone who is even somewhat serious about what they're trying to do, that natural language interface just offers far too little control for their purposes.

*) For the purposes of this comment, "AI" refers to the kinds of natural language-driven generative AI heavily marketed by companies like Microsoft, not the general concept of artificial intelligence or even the underlying technology of those products.

It's kind of like asking British people why they use the word "boffin" to refer to scientists and engineers. People use the words the people around them use, so it's just normal to them.

I must admit, however, as someone who is not American, that I do feel a certain ...discomfort with the way they use the word "community" that I don't feel with most other Americanisms. It's kind of similar to how I'm wary of American things with the word "family" in the name (family values, Family Radio etc.), it feels like there's something sinister behind the choice of the word, even though there's nothing wrong with the word itself. So it would be interesting to find out whether there is, or it's just something like a remnant of most Americans living in small settlements being relatively recent history, but it would probably take a historical linguist to answer it.

What you're saying feels kind of circular. Regulations and their enforcement being lacking doesn't have any explanatory power for people's behaviour, when those same people are actively trying to prevent regulation from happening. To begin with, someone with a shred of morals wouldn't need regulations to try to minimise harm to their employees' health on the work floor.

Also, lawmakers doing the bidding of evil people doesn't make the lawmakers any less evil; it's not as though their children are being held hostage or something.

I'm not really seeing any logic that here doesn't ultimately boil down to "they're evil". Of course, being aware of the problems with current regulations is important and can lead to practical solutions that can improve people's lives and be implemented in the relatively short term, but focussing exclusively on that obscures the more fundamental problem: that our society is set up so that greedy, unempathetic bastards float to the top. And that too, requires a solution.

That seems unlikely to me. If they were fully timer-based, that would mean there are times when cars would have to stop even though there are no pedestrians trying to cross, and we can't have that(!)

The outliers are the exception that prove the rule though. The very fact that intersex people exist at all shows that the physical process of inducing the development of sexual characteristics is complicated and messy, and not a simple switch. It's just that evolution has fine-tuned the process enough that in the majority of cases it leads to people who are within ranges that can be considered "wholly male" or "wholly female". So the sexual binary model isn't useless, but it's important to be aware that it is just a model and not reality.

I recently watched Andromeda Stories, a 1982 feature-length TV special based on a manga by Takemiya Keiko (most famous for To Terra) and Mitsuse Ryuu (apparently a pretty well-known SF author), and it was pretty interesting.

It's about a planet in the Andromeda galaxy that is secretly being invaded from the top down by machine lifeforms that take over people's bodies and connect them to a network, kind of similar in concept to the Borg in Star Trek, but a few years earlier. However, there is also a group of people from another planet that got taken over by the same machines, fled to this planet and integrated into the local society, and now work to fight against the machines. And their leader is... not the protagonist. Neither of them, as it switches protagonists 1/3 of the way. The first one is Il, a woman warrior from yet another planet who came specifically to fight the machines, but on her own terms. After that she's replaced by Jimsa, the prince of the first empire to get taken over, who was born earlier in the film, has the power to resist the machines and grew up to be the most powerful momma's boy in the world. Needless to say, Il is the cooler of the two.

Now, I can't honestly say this is a great work. The writing is pretty clunky; characters sometime behave inexplicably, there are time where the story tries to make a point, but it doesn't manage to get the framing right, and it has possibly one of the dumbest deaths in fiction history. I'm not a big fan of the bloodline nonsense, either.

That said, if you're at all interested in the premise and have some tolerance for awkward storytelling, I do recommend it. It moves at a fast clip and is never boring, has some pretty cool science-fiction concepts and the ending is quite something. It's a satisfying watch despite its flaws.

Keep in mind that the skills needed for game development were pretty much dark arts at the time. There was little to no formal education for them and few tools that weren't made in-house. So not only was the pool of people they could put to work immediately pretty small, the competitive market meant that companies were incentivised to produce the most impressive-looking games, meaning they didn't need merely competent people, but the freaks who could pull the most out of the limited hardware.

So they were worth their weight in gold, but companies didn't actually want to pay them that much.

I just have a Music directory with a subdirectory for each album named - , with the files inside being named <disc number (if needed)> - .

I don't even use the library functionality of any audio player. I just have my file manager set up so that it uses the cover art as the thumbnail, set the thumbnails to a big size, and use the built-in search functionality for finding something. That limits what can be found, but I can't say I ever needed to find an album by the year it came out.

I remember the CEO of NVIDIA making similar claims like 10-15 years ago (and being rather eager for that future to come), but I'm not really seeing anything that has changed since then that makes it more likely now.

There's the increases in hardware costs, yes, but in order to get sufficiently low latency, you can't just plop one or a few big data centers per country, you need at least one smaller one pretty much per town. And to ensure a good quality of service, those are going to need more redundant hardware than a more centralised solution would, and given that cloud gaming service providers are also affected by hardware getting more expensive, that would make for some very high up-front costs.

There's the possibility of VCs throwing dumb money at these companies until they control the market, but for that to work, they need to actually be able to take control of the market. But they're not just competing against the latest and greatest, they're also competing against ten year old hardware that's considerably more affordable. Things aren't advancing as quickly as they used to, and I doubt the shrinking number of people who do always want the best possible are going to be too thrilled about having graphics littered with compression artifacts.
