You should be able to find a few good mods on moddb for graphics, bugfixes and just quality of live mods if you want to try it. Though I would recommend not using many gameplay mods if you haven't played the series before

I sometimes get the same problem with my machine. Its usually that the drip tray is full or wiggled free and is not locked all the way back.
On the chance that your countertop is uneven maybe the shaking could push the tray out of position.
Otherthan user error that's nothing I noticed, so maybe it's a lemon.
