Ubuntu server is old as dirt and stable af. I use that, and run CasaOS as a beginner-friendly GUI interface. There is lots of trial and error, learning and some frustration, but it's so rewarding! The Arr apps, jelly seer and qbittorret and jellyfin are all nearly out of the box ready with casaos app store. It's a great place to start.
I get that lotsa ppl love it and have nostalgia... But it was Waaaaaaaaaaay too weeby for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm just as happy starting at @ 2b's booty as the next hetero cis gamer male... But the plot twists, ultra gravitas dialogue, teen robot angst paired w a post Apocalypse world that's still all about hyper sexualized girlbots was all just... Too much for me to take seriously. The combat, while interesting, also became a very tedious exercise in juggling while holding down buttons and switching perspectives. It felt like old armored core... In the bad way.
I mean, those are nice addons, but the people that ive handed vanilla gnome to whove never used linux before didn't come screaming to me "how fo i dash to dock?!?!"
Like if thats the workflow you want, you just search extensions and customize... but none of these are required to just like sit down and do basic stuff.
Now KDE on the other hand.... Just trying to find out why bluetooth or clock or volume or whatever quick access isnt where i expect on the kde toolbar. or figure out that i right click the correct "separator" to go into a separate like "widget" menu THAT IS TOTALLY SEPARATE FROM THE BASIC SETTINGS APP, or whatever to set those up is just... bizzare.
Glad it works for ya. I know that some bugs seem to be distro-dependent, so i recognize its more stable on some... for me? Nightmare.
"Autohide" n dodge window feature of taskbar broken for several different apps, but not all. Sometimes displaces the border of the windows offscreen trying to hide
Start menu freezes regularly
Dolphin freezes n hangs a lot in general. God it took me all of 3 secs to say " I NEEd to disable that stupid bouncing "LOADING" animation ASAFP"
Sections of taskbar dead/unclickable suddenly... aka bluetooth quick acess or volume controll
Worst is a giant mesh of graphical glitching and artifacts upon waking from sleep, have to close windows, sometimes restart. Seems its a known issue w video caching for nvidia gpus (fucking nvidia, of course)
... Not a complete list. Anyway, I have GNOME installed on exactly the same pc, same distro, none of this bug shit happens.
Kde is so ugly and buggy, requiring tons of setup n knowhow to fix. GNOME feels limiting and oversimplified, but honestly 9 out of 10 times its fine.... even if its setting menu infuriates on the regular.
Im old and i dont having 100 hrs to rice shit anymore
Good plan. Hard to say where my immense nostalgia ends and quakes "greatness" begins, but the og campaign is still one of my happy places after decades... and the folks at id n nightdive etc have done a great job adding to it and updating it for modern times. Dimension of the Machine is fantastic!!
If possible, transport yourself back to 1997 and get some friends to do a local multiplayer threewave or deathmatch... god, my brothers and i had so much fun.
Wish i could find where i read that google was planning to eliminate bootloader access... they walked it back in the end after expected uproar. Ultimately, the pressure from 'verified by google' and the changes to AOSP are enough pressure to push out ROMS as it is...
Im not trying to "spread fud." The state of 3rd party software on android is where it is. Google is introducing a high friction system for unverified apps that includes fees paid directly to google, and is not releasing to aosp in advance at all... this potentially means things like f droid and aurora cant operate. It doesnt mean that gos wont "allow" sideloading, but that you wont have alternatives to load. It also means you will have to increasingly be limited to sandboxed google play, with more barriers to overcome to make those apps work on non-android. https://www.androidauthority.com/android-changes-third-party-app-stores-3613409/
Unfortunately though they certainly do not all work, and some work only partially. Depends on the bank, the app and the feature. Wallet services are completely unavailable.
Have never looked back since i switched to gos... just buy a refurbed pixel to avoid giving big G ya monry.
Remember, though, in less than 200 days google kills all "sideloading." It seriously fucks with gos, and they have hinted they will eventually disable flashing custom roms
Bluetooth is SO FAR FROM GREAT. it is, in fact, terrible.
Wont connect to the right'profile'
Connects to wrong device,
Misprioritizes devices,
Confuses which audio sink you want
Will not reliably remember preferences and settings. Connects as telephone whether you want it to or not. Connects automatically w/out asking making you fiddle with settings every time. Requires menus/screens and setting shit just to function...as opposed to, say 'just plug it in'
Broadcasts an easily exploitable signal to everyo e nearby
Constantly needs battery/charge
Has to 'talk' to you to function
Very little if any standardization for pairing/trusting across MFG companies... i mean stop me anytime to let me know how flippi g "great" it is. We traded dead simple, reliable, universal tech for this deeply flawed, frustrating garbage just so we could say "look, no cables!!"
Yes. Cast iron is best. It and high carbon steel are the only real "non stick" because thyre the only ones you can season. Dont use "nonstick" pans they are just pollutants and give you cancer. Seasoning cast iron is easy (really... Do less! Stop reaming it and scrubbing it to death... just get it really hot and wipe it). Cast iron last forever... these other things become garbage in 1-5 yrs
She loved fast cars, horseback riding, did her own stunts, was rumored to have had an affair with the president, and people love to speculate that the car crash that killed her was orchestrated to prevent her going public...she died at only 29... Anyway, listen. I LOVE graphene. Everyone should use it, BECAUSE google is demonstrably a band of fuckwits. Im not trying to dissuade but inform. I am excited for an announcement about who theyre working with when they say their future is a phone made in connjunction with a "major OEM" maker. https://www.androidheadlines.com/2025/10/grapheneos-may-break-pixel-exclusivity-with-a-new-phone-in-2026.html
