At the end, when members could vote who haven't, the 7 voted for Johnson and 2 of the three who voted for others eventually did as well. This was a message to Johnson. There are more than 9 Republicans who could vote for a motion to vacate.

There are verbal votes taken by the house as a group, with times as you describe. At that point, the side that is shouted down makes a motion for the yeas and nays.
