Grid scale power generation and storage are more efficient and effective. Yet the consumer solar and battery market is booming. There's lots of factors at play. People already own their roofs. They pay a premium on using grid power vs commercial users. It's an easy and relatively safe way to invest your own money, etc..
And then the batteries follow the solar panels. If grid operators would manage their own batteries and pay us properly for the energy we put into the net, then privately owning a battery would not make sense.
Yeah you need to check your house's wiring diagram to know where a good spot is to plug it in. But in Belgium there's a legal limit of 2.5kw draw on these things, so you have to fuck up pretty bad to do serious damage

I have both already in Belgium, they're great. The solar production and power usage in my townhouse were too low for a hardwired battery to make economic sense. But with plug in batteries the installation cost is basically 0 so you can get smaller sized batteries. The 5kwh one we got is plenty to cover from sundown to the next day, even if we decide to run a wash or something.
And then we already had regular solar panels. But the price of the plug-in ones was so low that we decide to build a rain shelter for our bikes out of wall-mounted solar panels. Close to the same price and made out of metal and glass instead of wood and plastic.
We have experienced TS devs in our company. They layed the foundations for the conversion and help during code reviews. I agree that the LLM are not to be trusted, but they are good at following examples. So it's going well so far

I've been in the business for 15 years and for me writing code was never my favorite part of the job. I enjoy seeing results. I can write about 3-5 different programming langauges fairly competently, but I can compredend amd critique many more. We are in the middle of a migration from Blazor (which MS seems to have semi-abandoned) to React and the LLM is really helping to fill some gaps in my typescript knowledge. It's also really good at conversions which, in my opinion, are especially boring because after all that hard work you end up with the same functionality.
9 hours of travel is also hell. Add some stops along the route, do some sightseeing, visit some cities by rail. It'll be slower but much more rewarding
Well the materials matter a bit. But for example wind mill vanes are also made out of horrible, hard to recycle materials. Yet over their lifespan the amount of oil and gas that doesn't have to get burned makes up for it.
Yeah.. I wish for people to feel proud that they are contributing and wanting to contribute more because it makes them feel good. Instead of debilitating shame for thinking they aren't doing enough.
Mostly policy news I guess. For example, some governments are increasing jet fuel subsidies to cancel out the higher oil prices. Yet rail projects are struggling to get funding.

You don't have to be a heavy polluter to be conscious of your impact on the planet. The biggest polluters care the least anyway. Laws can make a difference there but also normalizing eco-consciousness and marginalizing those that aren't.
