It's both in my opinion. I'm originally from South East Asia and I don't know much about my neighbours, but people in home country love repetitive love stories, slap stick comedies and shallow jokes, although I heard few similar complaints from other South East Asians. But in any case, these kind of media is popular in the region. It occurred to me that with how difficult life is for many people in South East Asia, they don't want to be reminded more how tough it is by watching thought-provoking existential dramas, which Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong media have generated and is famous for. The East Asians are richer, more educated and have more material security so they have more time to think.
I don't know about Griffith and Johan. I just thought they are of the same level of asshole-ness as Patrick Bateman, Tyler Durden and Joker because they are put together in this post 😅

I don't know about you but i see on social media defending and glazing toxic masculine figures such as Tyler Durden and Patrick Bateman. The profile of those admirers are typically lonely and insecure men, which another user has pointed out.
Most of the ticket sales would have probably come from Asia. They love blockbuster movies that let them just turn their minds off and enjoy the spectacles to make them forget the tough and hectic everyday life. Despite the rising income of Asians (which is why Hollywood patronise Asian audiences because the latter is a huge customer base), they are overworked and both the standard and cost of living is still bad. We don't really realise how good we have it in the West with better social and labour protections and we are not socially expected to work extra time. My Indian colleagues said they don't celebrate Fridays the way we do, because many of them are expected to work on the weekend unpaid.
