The semantics of something like Handle does add a lot of clarity for me. I had just written an app using tokio and arc and the clones always felt off.

Without ref counting it is hard to know when to free or safely change a value with multiple consumers

I installed and ran gentoo in 2005 on a home server that hosted a file sharing repository and php forum for my friends.

In college I ran Ubuntu on my netbook for programming and internet browsing on.

Then in 2021 Windows 11 came out and refused to install on my 2017 laptop. So I threw my hands up and installed EndeavorOS in a dual boot configuration. After a few months, EndeavorOS broke my boot with an update. Threw up my hands again and installed Fedora and haven't had an issue in years.

I'm still using my 2017 Thinkpad T470. Great machine with flawless Fedora compatibility out of the box. Only fingerprint requires extra config to use. My machine isn't great for gaming with integrated kaby lake graphics, but I'm still very surprised what I can play via proton and updated Mesa.

It has been great not having to spend money constantly upgrading like the phone industry commands.

on How to migrate from GMail · c/degoogle · 2 pts · 315d

I bought a domain and used my domain for email for a few years with Gmail being used. Then one day I switched it to Proton and I didn't really have to do much because it is the same email address but a different service under the hood.

The thing that takes time is updating all of your accounts and contacts to use your new email. Took years for me. But I'm pretty free to move around now.

on Printers for Linux · c/linux · 2 pts · 316d

I bought a WiFi Brother printer 3 years ago and had a terrible time with Fedora Linux after Google discontinued Google Print services. I eventually gave up and would ask my partner to print from her Windows machine.

We now have a WiFi Canon laser printer and I'm printing from phone, Fedora, and USB memory stick with no issues. Never even installed drivers for anything.
