That’s funny! Do you say “an Irish goodbye” in English when someone leaves without saying goodbye? In German, we say “einen polnischen Abgang machen”, which literally means “to make a Polish exit.” (Apologies to my Polish friends!)

I don't know if the origin of "Dödel" really meant fool or simpleton, but in modern German it is little children speech for your little "peepee", and it theres no other meaning for this word left. Perhaps back then it already had this meaning and it simply translates to "Yankee wiener" or something similar..
