I live in a country with very expensive education costs. If you're poor you can almost forget about higher education. So the more free resources available, the better IMO. I think you just have to find the medium you enjoy creating on.
I can't speak for everyone, but something like Kavita would be overkill for me. I just use calibre to remove drm, and keep a backup in case my ereader dies.

Everything you say is spot on. I've chased the tail of the dragon in search of performance gentoo, custom kernels, over clocking, etc. The defaults are 99.99% that other .01 just isn't worth the effort.

But I could never play games with those awful hjkl keys for navigation, I hate them. Also, I don't have to memorize nano. All the key combos are listed on the bottom. So it requires less mental load.
I don't think there is a left handed mode. You can change hotkeys in the game and create one. https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Controls If your a new player, that might be a bad idea though. The game is already so complex, that adding another layer of complexity might be to much.

On an unrelated note. I just had a giant Cyclops attack my fort and I couldn't get my gate closed in time. So a lone marksdwarf beat it with it's Iron crossbow until backup could arrive lol
