The future you're talking about won't be in your own hands. Technocapital will make those decisions about how to exploit the planet for you, and population stability, quality of life, and economic, measured use of resources (ie literally "conservative") will all be secondary, tertiary, or even more distant goals. There will not be a great flash of light where turning the planet into a gray brick will yield a positive singularity. When we've used the world up, it's gone, but you and I will be left alive for a litle while to writhe like flayed worms in hell. Maybe another species can guzzle up our bones in several million years to make a computer do unnecessary math calculations with the hopes of achieving infinite growth?

Been reading this thread interested as someone whose loved one works for municipal IT. On that basis I sympathize with your perspective, but I have to take issue with this statement:

And now, Americans, stuck in a system that has been stolen by a skinwalker.

I wouldn't say so. This is the system that we have. The executive office has been erasing checks and balances since WWII. The Heritage Foundation and other SIGs have been pushing white supremacy for 200 years. ICE was created by Bush Jr. after after a mob riot in Florida disrupted a recount that could have given the presidency to Al Gore. Generously this is when we can say our democracy first proved flawed, but the rationalizations and mechanisms go back to our founding. We haven't been hijacked, we are the monster and have been for some time.

Regular, non-expert internet users find it interesting, or even amusing, to generate images or videos using AI and to send that media to their friends. While sophisticated media aesthetics find those creations gauche or even offensive, a lot of other cultures find them perfectly acceptable. And it’s an inarguable reality that millions of people find AI-generated media images emotionally moving.

You're describing the internet equivelant of ignorance and figurative poverty, where people don't have the knowledge or the resources to make better choices (fast food deserts, faith healers, the PowerBall) because they are institutionally deprived. This is the same class of users/consumers that big companies look for those exact same qualities in to shill the exact same AI garbage to because they don't know anybetter. This article is suggesting Mozilla flood the streets of a poor neighborhood with their own crank because their crank is cut less. I see the argument as bad, I see the premise as evil, and I see the rhetoric as manipulative. Respectfully, no.

All true, but the evangelical right don't care about that, that's all neocon power games and European stuff. The power driving how the admin behaves has nothing to do with longterm geopolitical thinking and everything to do with racialized religious intolerance, property deals, and people literally praying for the end of the world.

I was begging people to listen. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are fucking failures but Harris, while still a milquetoast cop, would have at some point stopped supporting Israel because of optics. Probably after too many were already dead of course. But the actual theology of mainline Christianity involves prophecies where both Israel and everyone on all sides of her suffer inconceivably. Christians have reversed the causation so that by causing, hopefully, a nuclear hot war in the Middle East they literally think Jesus will come back. There is and was NO ROOM for Palestinians in this plan. Not a one. There is, in fact, no room for anybody but the sanctified corpses of Jews the Christians only used as pawns and their own selves just waiting on the smoking ruins for Jesus. This is WHY Americans support Israel and even the Democrats still sell them guns: They virtue signal being Christian for campaigning optics, and that means selling guns to God's chosen fall guys. I tell you with 100% certainty Netanyahu knows this very basic fact about the American Christian right and exploited it to stay in power and out of jail. Trump needed to win an election to stay out of jail. October 7th was perfect timing for them. The idiot "faithful" democrats had to virtue signal their adherence to iron age thought systems or the so-called moderate vote they believed in would completely evaporate. Well, they were never going to win that game if they were playing with conservative Christians in practically their home town of Israel Apocalypse stuff.

Yeah this is why I argued what I argued. This is why I dealt with getting called an idiot, centrist, and a shill. The plan by our administration and the rich Israelis is to let Israel stir up a general war, maybe even a nuclear exchange, let all those pesky people in the holy land erradicate eachother. The more they do and the more violently and brutally they do it, the harder the ripcord of Christofascism is yanked. I'm not really looking forward to seeing what these people are like when they think they're literally all bit players in the Book of Revelarions.

I understand that the ~Vibe of this thing wandering around and then getting knocked over in America was on point but I'm not sure I can connect the defacement of a little trashcan with some broad rejection of the liberal status quo. If I have to make one clear connection between now and then its that we're talking about a culture that delighted in breaking this stupid thing that wasn't hurting anybody, and then that culture elected Trump. I doubt much thought was put into it, rather the opposite of thought. "I've seen the little attention getting robot on social media and I'm going to break it now to put an end to what I see as frivolous decadence, then let smarter people come up with a post-hoc justification about why this Had To Happen that makes our personal trauma and impulses toward sociopathy into a linearly constructed causative sequence that justifies the occurance."

I also had this exact feeling about 'the world falling apart and how everyone who likes X thing are stupid sheeple', but X thing was the musical genre diminuitively referred to now as Stomp Clap Hey music. Hated the shit during its heyday. It symbolized elder millenials burying their heads in the sand and ignoring the general shit situation of the planet to reread Harry Potter books and call Trump a poo head on websites. To me it seemed to appeal to people who were formerly "free spirits" and "deep thinkers" who were reaching their mid-30s and finally able to advance in their careers and afford homes, so they were beginning to feel like their upbringings during thr financial crisis were just bad dreams. If it had been within my ability to crush "Stomp Clap Hey" music and kill the collective enjoyment of it I would have. But I realized it was just... fucking... music... I could ignore it. And whether or not it meant all those things I felt it did, ruining it for other people would have been wrong. So I stopped badmouthing it and now we call it Stomp Clap Hey and the thinkers who give a shit are thinkering over that I guess.

If there is no point to being cute with the stupid assemblage of trash then what is gained for beating the stupid assemblage of trash? Ape-man catharsis? The jackasses did it because they were in on the game of anthropomorphizing an assemblage of trash too, and breaking it was probably at least as much fun as taking the assemblage of trash out hitchhiking. But what those local yocals showed the world about their casually cruel jocularity was that in Europe and Canada, you can play makebelieve with the assemblage of trash, but in America, the assemblage of trash is an outsider not conforming to the status quo but still requiring a modicum of consideration and thought to engage with, and when that kind of book readin' deep thinkin' faggit rocks up on our shores the cultural instinct is treating it like an assemblage of trash even if its a mother of three. Then celebrate our rude 'tude havin' selves and lord it over the effete Entire Rest Of The Planet.

Forgive me if I don't take lectures about cultural moments from contrarion fucking sports websites. I guess as a piece of comedy writing its enjoyable but as an actual argument it makes Americans look like filthy fucking imaginationless troglodytes. And what makes that come off worse is the celebration of that streak in us. To break toys after seeing other people playing makebelieve. To laugh at the concept of applying even rhetorical compassion to an inanimate object, as if people haven't had a rich spiritual and at times familial connection with the inanimate world for thousands of years.

I get that you posted this probably alluding to LLMs and as a Beehawfuck I know I am coming off really pissy here and I must apologize. Its not that I don't appreciate the joke or have wholly missed the punchline. If an eightball loaded with GPT were inserted into my life asking for hitchhiking, I would punt it into somebody else's fucking lightcone. But this stupid trashcan hitchhiker thing wasn't selling the idea of replacing the people closest to me or their knowledge bases. It was the rare sort of toy adults around the world had the opportunity to play with. And as much as I enjoy the comedy writing, reading this fart sniffer sports blogger dissing all but a particular subset of crude Ugly American-stereotype assholes, with the soft-jingo touch suggesting Canadians are basically morons that Americans babysit (which as an attitude looks PARTICULARLY evil and chauvanistic of late), I kinda had to speak up.

Edit: I let the bad day I'm having affect this comment. I don't believe in deleting comments unless its something I feel reflects a whole different me that isn't me anymore, and I've got nothing like that on Fediverse. I stand by my thoughts and feelings here but they were expressed perhaps with a bit much vitriol. Please excuse me. I have no real enmity to the OP here.

I think they might have mumblemouthed it but you bastards have decided among yourselves that their mispoken statement cannot merely represent an ignorant and misinformed read of history but an intentionally violently racist viewpoint. The screenshotted user was I warrant correct in their historical analysis and absolutely fucking wrong to put words in the thread-OPs mouth, as if earnestly trying to alienate instead of persuade or fact check a damn thing.

Like yeah, abolition wouldn't have happened without black people, from freedmen writers to rebelling chattel slaves, advocated for themselves. All the well meaning white people (on average rarer then anyway) wouldn't have meant much without black people wanting to be free and making it known.

Why would you go out of your way to read a person's response in the worst possible way? Maybe I'm just a fukken airhead but I didn't see any dogwhistle that justified how you lot are speaking to them. You simply decided to tar and feather the fucker for being kind of wrong about labor history. Then you springboarded into a merciless bed of assumptions.

There you have it, JKR says magic isn't real, only hatespeech is. She cares more about hate than the childish whimsy and makebelieve she built her name off of. If she could actually see how far she's fallen saying that.
