I use Gnome on my Thinkpad. That machine has an i7 and 16gb of ram. Ok my tiny Chromebook I got Mate. Very lightweight and almost as many features as Gnome.
There's a big difference there. Before the smart phone we would use notepads. Writing things down on a little pad of paper is something we've done for 100s of years. We just swapped out the paper or booklet for a digital device.

BitTorrent. I only need to share a file once and it could potentially reach millions of people. It's old tech now but it feels like magic to me.
